ياO نفسِsoul حِنِّيyearn فقدfor indeed أمسيتِyou have become this evening مُفردَةًalone
عمنfrom the one whom بُليتyou were afflicted بذِكراهُby his remembrance وعديتِand you were kept away
O soul, yearn, for evening finds you alone,
O my soul, you have become isolated,
Apart from him whose memory afflicts you, and kept away
From the one whose memory distressed you and kept you awake.
عَمَّنfrom the one whom تودينَyou love حتىuntil أنتِyou صاديَةٌthirsty
لاnot ترتوينَyou quench your thirst وَلَوand even if فيin الجَمِّabundant water خُلِّيتِyou were left
From the one you love, until you are parched,
From the one you yearn for, even though you have become unresponsive,
Unable to quench your thirst, even if left in abundant water.
You are not satisfied, even if left alone.
سيقتshe was led لقتلكِto kill you مثلُlike الريمِthe white gazelle واضِحَةٌfair-skinned
أسبابُmeans حينٍdoom قضاهُdecreed it اللَهGod مَوقُوتِappointed
A fair-skinned woman like a white gazelle was led to slay you—
The reasons for your death have been made clear,
The means of an appointed doom decreed by God.
At a time decreed by Allah.
رُعبُوبَةُsoft and delicate الخَلقِbodily form مِعطارٌrichly perfumed إذاwhen برزَتshe came forth

Soft of form and richly perfumed, when she comes forth
The beautiful gazelle, when it appears
Among the houses, she walks with graceful bearing.
Walking gracefully between the houses.
أنتِyou قَبلَbefore المَوتِdeath ساقِيتيmy cupbearer
كأسَcup الحياةِlife نَعَمyes ياO جُملُJuml لوif شِيتِyou wished
O Juml, before death, will you give me to drink
O camel, will you quench my thirst before death,
The cup of life? Yes, O Juml, if you wished,
With the cup of life? Yes o camel, if you wish.
أحيَيتِyou would revive نَفساًa soul كماjust as أَبتَتِّهاyou destroyed it قَعَصاًinstantly
بِمُرهَفِwith a keen-edged shaft مِنamong سِهامarrows المَوتِdeath حيتُوتِswift and piercing
You would revive a soul, just as you slew it outright,
You revived a soul, as you protected it,
With a keen, swift and piercing shaft from death's arrows.
From the sharpened arrows of death that surround it.
