لقدindeed طارتْhas flown شَعاعاًin scattered fragments كلَّevery وجهٍdirection
خَفَارةُthe protection of ماthose whom أَجَارَsheltered أَبوAbu (father of) بَراءِBaraʾ
Indeed, it has flown to pieces in every direction—
the protection of those whom Abu Baraʾ sheltered.
فَمِثْلُso the likes of مُسَهَّبٍMusahhab وبنيand the sons of أبيهِhis father
بجنبِbeside الرَّدْهِal-Radh منon كنفيْthe two flanks of سَواءِSawaʾ
So the likes of Musahhab and his father's sons
are beside al-Radh, on the two flanks of Sawaʾ.
بنيO sons of أمِّUmm (mother of) البنينَal-Banin (the sons) أمَاdid you not سَمِعْتُمyou heard
دُعَاءَthe plea of المُسْتَغيثِthe one seeking help معَat المَسَاءِevening
Sons of Umm al-Banin, did you not hear
the plea of the one seeking help at evening,
وتنويهَand the raised voice of الصّريخِthe caller for help بلىyes indeed ولكِنْand yet
عَرفتمْyou knew أنّهthat he was صَدْقُsteadfast in اللّقاءِbattle
and the raised voice of the caller for aid? Yes—but
you knew that he was steadfast in battle.
فماso not صَفِرتْbecame empty عيابُthe bags of بنيthe sons of كلابٍKilab
ولاnor القُرَطَاءُal-Qurataʾ مِنْof ذمِّreproach concerning الوفاءِkeeping faith
So Banu Kilab's bags are not empty—
nor are al-Qurataʾ—of reproach for broken faith.
أعامرَO ʿAmir عامرَʿAmir of السَّوْءَاتِshameful deeds قِدْماًof old
فلاso neither بالعَقْلِin wisdom فُزْتَyou have excelled ولاnor السّنَاءِnobility
O ʿAmir, ʿAmir of shameful deeds of old,
you have excelled neither in wisdom nor in nobility.
أَأَخْفَرْتَhave you broken faith with النّبيَّthe Prophet وكنتand you were قدِماًlong ago
إلىtoward السّوْءاتِshameful deeds تجريyou race بالعراءِacross the open country
Have you broken faith with the Prophet—you who have long been
racing toward shameful deeds across the open country?
فلَسْتَso you are not كجارِlike the protector of جارِthe neighbor of أبيAbu (father of) دؤادٍDuʾad
ولاnor الأسديّthe man of Asad جارِthe protector of أبيAbu (father of) العلاءِal-ʿAlaʾ
So you are not like the protector of Abu Duʾad's neighbor,
nor the Asadi, the protector of Abu al-ʿAlaʾ.
ولكنْand yet عارُكُمْyour disgrace داءٌa disease قديمٌlong-standing
وداءُand the disease of الغدْرِtreachery فاعْلمْso know شرّthe worst داءِdisease
But your disgrace is a long-standing disease,
and the disease of treachery—know this—is the worst disease.
