أَتَحْسَبُdo they think? أولاَدُsons of اللّقِيطَةِthe foundling woman أنَّنَاthat we
علىon الخَيْلِthe horses لَسْنَاwe are not مثلَهُمْlike them فيamong الفوارِسِthe horsemen
Do the foundling woman's sons think that we
Do the sons of Al-Liqita think we are not like them in horsemanship?
on horseback are not their equals among horsemen?
That we are people who do not see killing as glory,
وَأَنَّاand that we أناسٌpeople لاnot نَرَىwe regard القَتْلَbeing slain سُبّةًa disgrace
ولاand not نَنْثَنيwe turn back عندَbefore الرّمَاحِthe spears المدَاعسِpiercing
And we are men who see no shame in being slain,
Nor do we retreat when faced with spears in battle?
nor turn back before piercing spears.
That we give food to guests from spherical bowls,
وأَنَّاand that we لَنُقْريwe surely feast الضّيفَthe guest مِنْfrom قَمعِthe tops of الذُّراcamel humps
وَنَضْرِبُand we strike رأْسَthe head of الأبلَخِthe arrogant man المُتَشَاوسِhaughtily scowling
And we surely feast the guest on the tops of camel humps,
And strike the necks of fleet-footed camels?
and strike the head of the arrogant, scowling man.
We return the conceited teachers when they transgress
نَرُدُّwe drive back كُمَاةَthe champions of المُعْلَمينَthose bearing battle-marks إذاwhen انتَخواthey boast
بِضَرْبٍwith blows يُسَلّيdispels نخوةَthe pride of المُتَقَاعِسِthe laggard
We drive back the champions bearing battle-marks when they boast,
With blows that humiliate the lazy ones' arrogance.
with blows that dispel the laggard's pride,
With every protector of truth, glorious and brave,
بِكُلِّwith every فَتىًyoung man حَامِيdefender of الحقيقةِwhat must be defended مَاجِدٍnoble
كَرِيمٍgenerous كسرْحَانِlike a wolf of الغَضَاةِthe ghada tree مُخالسِstriking by stealth
with every noble youth who defends what must be defended,
Noble, like the reddish coats of young camels.
generous, like a wolf of the ghada tree, striking by stealth.
They defend their people and tribes
يَذُودُونَthey ward off عَنْfrom أحْسَابِهِمْtheir ancestral honor وَتِلاَدِهِمْand their inherited wealth
ببيضٍwith gleaming swords تَقُدُّcleave الهَامَheads تحتَbeneath القوانِسِthe helmets
They defend their ancestral honor and inherited wealth
With white swords that lead death under the banners.
with gleaming swords that cleave heads beneath helmets.
So ask the sons of Badr when you meet them,
فَسَائِلْso ask بَنيthe sons of بَدْرٍBadr إذاwhen ماever (emphasis) لَقِيتَهُمْyou meet them
بِمَاabout what فَعَلَdid الإخْوانُthe brothers يَوْمَon the day of التّمارسِcombat
So ask the sons of Badr whenever you meet them,
What the brothers did on the day of battle.
about what the brothers did on the day of combat.
When you go out, conceal who you met,
إذاwhen مَاever (emphasis) خَرَجْتُمْyou depart فاكتُمُواthen conceal مَنْwhom لَقِتُمُyou met
ولاand do not تكتُمُواconceal أخبارَكُمْyour news يin (apparent typo) المَجَالِسِthe gatherings
When you depart, conceal whom you met,
But do not conceal your news in gatherings.
and do not conceal your news in the gatherings.
And say we missed the claws of Khader’s tents,
وقولواand say زَلَلْنَاwe slipped عَنْaway from مَخَالِبِthe claws of خَادِرٍa lion in its lair

And say: 'We slipped free of the claws of a lion in its lair,
By it is shameful, when one does not fight.
with rancor in its breast so long as it is not engaged in combat.'
