And when I saw that affection did not avail me
When I saw affection was of no use to me
With him, nor show pity for a sufferer's plight,
With him, nor cure for my painful state,

I rebuked desire; indeed, I am a man who is not led
I checked my love, for I am one not led
By my desire or judgment toward a hopeless goal.
By fancy or opinion to vain hope.
