لَمَّاwhen رَأَيْتُكِI saw you فيin المَنامِthe dream أَعَدْتِyou restored لِيto me
أَغْلَىthe dearest الَّذِيof what حَلَّيْتِyou adorned مِنْof أَيَّامِيmy days
When I saw you in a dream, you restored to me
the dearest of my days that you had adorned:
أَيَّامَdays when كُنْتِyou were النُّورَthe light فيin عَيْنِthe eye of الرَّجَاhope
فَغَدَوْتِand you became ماwhat أَرْجُوI hope for مِنَamong الأَحْلامِdreams
days when you were the light in the eye of hope,
and became what I long for in dreams.
ماbetween بَيْنَa life عَيْشٍa life لاnot أَرَاكِI see you وَمِيْتَةٍand a death
فيهاin which أَرَاكِI see you ، شَغَلْتِyou filled لَيْلَthe night of مَنامِيmy dreams
Between a life in which I cannot see you and a death
in which I can see you, you filled the night of my dreams.
أَنْتِyou الوُجُودُexistence ، وَقَدْand indeed مَضَيْتِyou departed، فَمَاso nothing بَقَىremained
إِلَّاexcept رِضَاكِyour approval يُنِيرُlights لِيfor me قُدّامِيwhat lies ahead of me
You are existence itself; you have gone, and nothing remains
but your approval to light the way ahead of me.
مِنْكِfrom you ابْتدَأْتُI began وَمِنْكِand from you كُلُّevery مَزِيَّةٍvirtue
نُسِبَتْwas attributed إِلَيَّto me وَمِنْكِand from you عَذْبُthe sweetness of كَلامِيmy speech !
From you I began, and from you came every virtue
attributed to me, and the sweetness of my speech comes from you.
