ياO مَنْyou whose يَداكَyour two hands دَمٌblood لاdo not تَبْقَremain مُنْتَظِرَاwaiting
إذاwhen دَعَوْتَyou call upon السَّمَاheaven أَنْto تُدْرِكَreceive المَطَرَاthe rain
O you with blood on your hands, do not keep waiting
to receive the rain when you call upon heaven.
إرْحَمْhave mercy on أخاكَyour brother وسامِحْand forgive إنif لَقِيتَyou encounter أذًىharm
يَسْمَعْwill hear دُعاءَكَyour prayer رَبٌّa Lord يَرْحَمُhas mercy on البَشَرَاhumankind
Have mercy on your brother, and forgive if you suffer harm;
a Lord who has mercy on humankind will hear your prayer.
ماwhat ليis it with me أرَىI see النَّاسَthe people والإجْرامُwhile crime ببَيْنَهُمُin their midst
فَلاyet not يُعِيرونَهُthey lend it سَمْعًاa hearing ولاnor بَصَرَاsight
Why do I see people, with crime in their midst,
yet giving it neither a hearing nor a glance?
ولاnor يُحَرِّكُهُمْmoves them مِنْfrom حُزْنِthe grief of ثاكِلَةٍa bereaved mother
لَطْمٌslapping عَلَىupon الخَدِّthe cheek أودَمْعٌor tears عَلَيْهِupon it جَرَىflowed ؟!
Nor are they stirred, as a bereaved mother grieves,
by slaps upon her cheek or tears that flow down it?!
لاno عُذْرَexcuse! إنْif سَكَتُواthey remain silent ماتُواthey will die عَلَىin مَضَضٍbitterness
فلاso let ... not يَلومَنَّever blame مِنْهُمْamong them ساكِتٌone who stays silent قَدَرَاfate !
No excuse! If they keep silent, they will die in bitterness;
so let no silent one among them blame fate!
وقَدْand indeed يَئِسْناwe have despaired مِنَof الحُكَّامِthe rulers نَسْأَلُهُمْwe ask them
بَعْضَsome الأَمَانِsafety فماyet not ألْقَوْاthey cast لناtoward us نَظَرَاa glance
And we have despaired of the rulers; we ask them
for a little safety, yet they have not spared us a glance.
ونَحْنُand we فِيin خَوْفِناour fear نَمْضِيwe go on لِكارِثَةٍtoward a catastrophe
تَقْضِيputs an end عَلَيْناto us ولاand does not تُبْقِيleave لَناof us أَثَرَاa trace
And in our fear we head toward a catastrophe
that will destroy us and leave no trace of us.
إنْif لَمْnot نَرُدَّwe turn back يَدًاa hand لِلْقَتْلِfor killing نُوقِفُهُwe stop it
زالَwill vanish الأَمانُsafety وَزادَand will grow الشَّرُّevil وانْتَصَرَاand will triumph !
If we do not turn back a hand raised to kill and halt the killing,
safety will vanish, and evil will grow and triumph!
