أُمُّmother العِيالِthe children غَدَتْhas become أَقَلَّless خُطورَةًdanger ،

The children's mother has become less dangerous—
if I speak of you in verse—than my children.
هِيَshe قَدْmay تُسامِحُنيforgive me إِذاif اسْتَأْذَنْتُهاI ask her permission

She may forgive me if I ask her permission,
but they may spill my ink...!

if they unanimously sentence me to banishment!

مَعَalong with أُمِّهِمْtheir mother إِنْif شَكَّكُواthey raise doubts بِمُرادِيabout my intent...
I can no longer go against their opinion,
or their mother's, if they doubt my intent...
عَلَّمْتُهُمْI taught them صِدْقَfidelity المَبادِئِthe principles فِيin الصِّبَاchildhood

I taught them in childhood to be true to their principles,
and gray hair obliges me to uphold my principles!
