أَيُّهاO الإِخْوَةُbrothers عُذْرَاforgive me ...
لاnot أرَىI see فيin المَوْتِdeath نَصْرَاvictory
O brothers, forgive me...
I see no victory in death.
لاnot أرَىI see نَصْرًاvictory لِأَهْليfor my people
وَهُمُwhile they are جَوْعَىhungry وأَسْرَىand captive
I see no victory for my people
while they are hungry and captive.
لاnot أَرَاهُI see it فيin يَتِيمٍan orphan
بَيْنَهُمْamong them فيin البَرْدِthe cold يَعْرَىis unclothed
I do not see it in an orphan
among them, unclothed in the cold.
إنَّindeed حُلْمَthe dream النَّصْرِof victory عِنْدِيfor me
أَطْوَلُthe longest الأَحْلامِof dreams عُمْرَاin lifespan
Indeed, for me, the dream of victory
is the longest-lived of dreams.
ولَكَمْand how often خِفْتُI feared عَلَيْهِfor it ،
مِنْfrom قُدومِthe coming المَوْتِof death ، هَدْرَاin vain !
And how often I have feared for it,
lest death should come in vain!
لاdo not تَلُومونيblame me ... فقَلْبيfor my heart
مِنْكُمُthan you بِالْفَقْدِwith loss أَدْرَىmore familiar !
Do not blame me... for my heart
knows loss better than you do!
مَنْwho ، تُرَىI wonder ، يَطْلُبُseeks عُسْرًاhardship
إِنْif رَأَىhe sees فيon الأُفْقِthe horizon يُسْرَاease
Who, I wonder, seeks hardship
if he sees ease on the horizon,
ويُريدُand wants العَيْشَlife مُرًّاbitter
ويَشاءُand wishes الرِّزْقَsustenance خُسْرَاloss ؟!
and wants life to be bitter,
and wishes his livelihood to bring loss?!
غَيْرَexcept أَنَّthat الدَّهْرَtime ، لُؤْمًاout of malice ،
زَجَّناthrust us فيinto الكَرْبِanguish حَشْرَاherded together
Yet time, in its malice,
herded us into anguish,
وعَلَىand under الكُرْهِcompulsion رَماناit pelted us
بِوصَاياwith injunctions الصَّبْرِof patience عَشْرَاten
and, against our will, pelted us
with ten injunctions to be patient.
فَرَضِيْناso we accepted المَوْتَdeath غَصْبًاunder duress
وأَلِفْناand we grew used to الأَسْرَcaptivity قَسْرَاby force
So we accepted death under duress,
and grew used to captivity by force,
وأَبَيْناand we refused الذُّلَّhumiliation شَعْبًاas a people
فيin سَماءِthe sky العِزِّof honor نَسْرَاan eagle
and, as a people, refused humiliation—
an eagle in the sky of honor,
شامِخًاlofty فيin الجَوِّthe air حَتَّىuntil
يَقْضِيَdecrees الخالِقُthe Creator أَمْرَاa decree
soaring proudly in the air, until
the Creator issues a decree,
فَتَعودَso it returns القُدْسُJerusalem قُدْسًاholy
ويَنالَand may gain السُّورُthe wall ثَاْرَاvengeance
so Jerusalem may be holy once more,
and the wall may have its vengeance.
يَحْتَفِيrejoices بِالْبَعْثِin resurrection قَبْرٌa grave
ويَهُزُّand shakes العَرْشَthe Throne مَسرَىa night journey
A grave rejoices in resurrection,
and a night journey shakes the Throne.
يَطْلُعُrises النَّصْرُvictory عَلَيْناupon us
منfrom لَياليthe nights الأَسْرِof captivity فَجْرَاas dawn
Victory rises upon us
as dawn from the nights of captivity.
ذاكَthat يَوْمُthe day اللهِof God يَجْزِيHe rewards
فيهِon it أَهْلَthe people الحَقِّof truth أَجْرَاa reward
That is God's day; He grants
the people of truth their reward that day.
فنَرَىso we see النَّصْرَvictory عِيانًاwith our own eyes
ونَشُمُّand we smell النَّصْرَvictory عِطْرَاas perfume
So we see victory with our own eyes,
and breathe in victory as perfume.
نَمْلَاُwe fill السُّوقَthe market غِناءًwith song
وسَماءَand the sky السُّوقِof the market شِعْرَاwith poetry
We fill the market with song,
and the market's sky with poetry.
ياO فِلَسْطينَPalestine الأَمانيof hopes
قَدْindeed تَاَخَّرْناwe have been late فَعُذْرَاso forgive us
O Palestine of our hopes,
we have been late—so forgive us.
إنَّindeed وَعْدَthe promise الحَقِّof truth آتٍis coming
خَطْوَةًa step تَتْبَعُfollows أُخْرَanother
Surely, the promise of truth is coming,
one step following another.
قادِمٌcoming يَومُa day خَلاصٍof deliverance
بَعْدَafter أَنْthat أَبْعَدَit remained distant دَهْرَاfor an age
A day of deliverance is coming,
after remaining distant for an age.
فعَلَىso upon القُدْسِJerusalem سَلامٌpeace
وَلِأَهْلِand for the people القُدْسِof Jerusalem بُشْرَىglad tidings
So peace be upon Jerusalem,
and glad tidings for Jerusalem's people.
ياO فلَسْطينُPalestine اجْمَعينَاgather us
بَعْدَafter طُولِthe length البَيْنِof separation كُثْرَاin great numbers !
O Palestine, gather us,
after long separation, in great numbers!
