أَحاوِلُI try أنْto أُغنِّيَI sing دُونَwithout جَدْوَىavail
فَقَدْfor indeed أَمْسَىhas become الغِناءُsinging لَدَيَّfor me شَكْوَىa lament
I try to sing—to no avail;
I try to sing, to no avail.
for singing among us has become a lament.
For singing has become a lament to me.
I offer you holiday greetings بِلاwithout فَرَحٍjoy وَشَعْبِيand my people
بِلاwithout يَوْمٍa day يمُرُّpasses بِغَيْرِwithout بَلْوَىaffliction

I offer you holiday greetings without joy, while my people

have no day that passes without affliction.
غَدَتْbecame أَيَّامُناour days فيduring الصَّوْمِfasting خَوْفًاfear
مِنَof الآتِيwhat is to come وكانَتْand they were طَعْمَthe taste of حَلْوَىsweets
Our days of fasting have turned to fear
Our days of fasting have turned to fear
of what is coming, though once they tasted sweet.
of what is to come, though once they tasted of sweets.
وتُقْناand we longed لِلْأَمانِfor safety فَصَارَso it became ذُعْرًاterror
فلاfor no يَحْمِيprotects مِنَfrom الأَعْداءِthe enemies مَأْوَىshelter
We yearned for safety, but it turned to terror;
And we longed for safety, only for it to turn to terror;
no refuge shields us from our foes.
for no shelter offers protection from enemies.
تَخافُfears علَىfor بَنِيهاher sons الأمُّthe mother لَكِنْbut
أَمامَin the face of النَّارِthe fire مِنْهاthan her المَوْتُdeath أَقْوَىstronger!
A mother fears for her sons, but
The mother fears for her sons, but
before the flames, death is stronger than she.
in the face of fire, death is stronger than she is!
I offer you holiday greetings عَلىwith أَمَلٍhope وَشَوْقٍand longing
