أَلَستَare you not بِجاعِليmaking me كَبَنيlike the sons of جُعَيلٍJuʿayl
هَداكَmay He guide you اللَهُGod أَوor كَبَنيlike the sons of جَنابِJanāb
Will you not make me like the sons of Juʿayl—
Are you not making me like the son of Ju'ayl,
may God guide you—or like the sons of Janāb?
May God guide you, or the son of Janab.
أَدِبُّI creep وَراءَbehind نُقدَةَa small sheep أَنlest تَرانيyou see me
وَدونَكَand between you and me بِالمَدينَةِin Medina أَلفُa thousand بابِdoors
I creep behind a small sheep, lest you see me,
I roam behind the small change lest you see me,
while a thousand doors in Medina stand between us.
While you have a thousand doors in the city.
وَأَحبِسُand I keep بِالعَراءِin the open wilderness المَحلِbarren بَيتيmy home
وَدونَكَand between you and me عازِبٌa remote place صَخَبُclamorous with الذُبابِflies
And I keep my home in the barren wilderness,
I pitch my tent in the open wilderness,
with a remote place, clamorous with flies, between us.
While suitors buzz around you.
أُحاذِرُI fear إِنif قَدَرتَyou gain power عَلَيَّover me يَوماًone day
عِقابَكَyour punishment وَالأَليمَand the painful مِنَof العَذابِtorment
I fear, if one day you gain power over me,
I fear if you ever gain power over me
your punishment and painful torment.
Your punishment and most painful torment.
