لَمّاwhen رأيْتُI saw أنَّthat مايَبْتَغِيwhat he seeks القِرَىa guest's fare
وأنَّand that ابْنَthe son of أَعْيَاAʿyā لامحالةinevitably فاضِحِيone who shames me
When I saw that what he sought was a guest's fare,
When I saw that the settlements were seeking
and that Ibn Aʿyā would inevitably shame me,
And that the son of tiredness was inevitably exposing me
شددتI braced حيازيمَthe ribs of ابنthe son of أعياAʿyā بشربةwith a draught ٍ
علىamid فاقةhunger ٍشدَّتْhad tightened أصولthe roots of الجوانحthe ribs
I braced Ibn Aʿyā's ribs with a draught,
I tightened the reins on the son of tiredness with a drink
amid hunger that had tightened the roots of the ribs.
Of poverty that tightened the roots of my ribs
وماand not كُنْتُI was مِثْلَlike الكاهِليِّal-Kāhilī وعِرْسِهِand his wife
بَغَىhe sought الوُدَّaffection مَطْرُوفَةfickle ِالعَيْنِthe eye طامِحِroving
And I was not like al-Kāhilī and his wife:
And I was not like al-Kahili and his wedding
he sought the love of a woman with a fickle, roving eye.
He sought love with wet, yearning eyes
غَدَاhe went forth at dawn باغِياًseeking يبغيhe seeks رِضاهاher approval وَودَّهاand her love
وغابتْand she was absent لهُfor him غيْبَthe absence of امرىءa person ٍغيرnot ناصحwell-wishing
He went forth in the morning, seeking her favor and her love,
He went seeking her satisfaction and love in the morning
and behind his back she acted like one who wished him no good.
And her love disappeared for him like an insincere friend
دَعَتْshe prayed to رَبَّهاher Lord ألاَّthat not يَزَالَcease to be بحاجَةٍin need
ولاand not يَغْتَديgo forth at dawn إلاّexcept عَلىon حَدّthe path of بارحِan ill-omened beast
She prayed to her Lord that he should never cease to be in need,
She called on her Lord that he not remain in need
nor set out at dawn except in the path of an ill-omened beast.
And only attack when necessary like a leopard
فَلَمَّاso when رَأتْshe saw أَلاَّthat not يُجِيبَHe answers دُعاءَهاher prayer
سقتهُshe gave him to drink علىwhile in لَوْحٍparching thirst دِمَاءَthe blood of الذّرَارحِblister beetles
So when she saw that He did not answer her prayer,
So when she saw that he did not answer her prayers
she gave him the blood of blister beetles to drink in his thirst.
She gave him a potion of blood from her veins to drink
وقالَتand she said شَرَابٌa drink بارِدٌcold فاشْرَبَنَّهُso do drink it
ولُمْand not يَدْرِhe knew ماwhat خاضَتْshe stirred لهُfor him بالمجادِحِwith the mixing sticks
And she said, “A cold drink—so do drink it!”
And said "A cold drink, so drink it"
And he did not know what she had stirred for him with the mixing sticks.
While he did not know what she had plotted against him
فَشَدَّso he weighed heavily بِذَاthrough this حُزْناًas grief علىupon ذيone possessing حفيظةprotective pride ٍ
وَهَانَand he was slight بِذَاthrough this غُرماًas a liability علىupon كفِّthe palm of جارحِan assailant
Thus he became a heavy grief to a man of honor,
So he tightened the noose of sorrow for the hot-tempered one
and thus a slight liability upon an assailant's hand.
And became indebted with that to the palm of the wounder

A man's brother is assailed in his stead, then shielded
A man's brother is preferred over him then feared
by shaggy-bearded men with hairless testicles, like blunt toy arrows.
With the hair of his beard and smooth legs like locusts
