وَحارَدَ الكَيلُ إِلّا كَيلَ مَحلوبِ
When he saw that the villages’ fertile lands were barred,
When he saw that the outskirts of villages were forbidden
And measured provisions dwindled, save for a measure of milk,
And only deceitful measures were allowed

شَيحانَةٍ خُلِقَت خَلقَ المَصاعيبِ
He filled the courtyard with a she-camel that rests till dawn and yields milk through hardship,
He closed the courtyard with a battle-ready lamp
A tall she-camel, built like untamed bull camels,
Of a resolute she-camel, made for adversity

High-humped and black, no tick can gain a footing on her,
Like an unassailable darkness that no mosquitoes pierce
Heavy of tread, neither inferior stock nor an aged she-camel.
Heavy-stepped, with no weakness or flaw

Among the safest livestock, she was kept with Shabath by
Those who secured wealth kept it with a miser
His dragging armored warriors by the head or by gripping their collars,
Whose neck or garment-hem guests must grab

And his urging the gallop, his tunic a full-length coat of mail,
And drove it to run, with its saddle-cloth trailing
Toward a repeated cry for help from somewhere unseen.
Toward a call from beyond perception's range
