So I am neither given gifts nor greatly honored

During my stay, if I do not lampoon the clan of Mukharram.

Shall I make my honor a shield for yours, for your sake,

And wound an honor that had never been wounded,

And revile a people whose father's glory

Was firmly anchored in every circumstance, never diminished?

For he was long of reach, his courtyard welcoming,

And the wall of his well was ancient, never demolished.

Patient through whatever befell him, no coward,

And his neighbor was not abandoned amid calamities.

    إِذا وَعَدَ المَعروفَ لَم يَتَنَدَّمِ

    He was generous to the seeker of bounty; his face shone bright;

When he promised a kindness, he felt no regret.

And his sons are fair and noble; they were raised

To the highest eminence by a peerless father—

Yazid, who defended with his sword on the day of the dawn raid,

Openly, and wheeled the colt as it stumbled in blood.
