Proud men have refused you—their glory has refused you—

Anything but glory; so look, humbled, at whom you challenge in honor.

Three graves, their dead struck down by swords,

Stars that fell, each star with his steadfast resolve.

So, a grave at Ajbal, and a grave at Hajir,

And the grave at the well—its kindler set the war ablaze.

And the worst of deaths is a dark one amid one's own kin,

Like the young woman's death, whose witness roused the clan.
