O ʿĀmir, you would indeed have had reach and honor,

Had the attainments of the man you rivaled been within reach.

You vied with a noble chief, well fashioned by the two Aḥwaṣes,

Lavish in gifts, with a proud rise to the bridge of his nose.

No task stays hard beyond the moment he mounts it,

Nor does he keep overnight any wealth in which he has a share.

A lamp for the traveler through darkness, lighting his way,

In the wake of a driven herd, to which the spoils are brought.

And a man like him, from Kilāb's ancestral stock,

Is given the keys, or offered submission.

Banū Mālik shrank from glory and honor,

And a goal where death awaited them, had they advanced.

Nor were they wrong to flee a decisive contest,

About which neither soothsayer nor arbiter has any doubt.
