فِدىًa ransom لِاِبنِfor the son of بَدرٍBadr يَومَon the day أَقدَمَhe advanced خَيلَهُhis cavalry
فِدىً لِاِبنِ بَدرٍ يَومَ أَقدَمَ خَيلَهُ
وَقَدand already خامَquailed أَقوامٌsome people طَريفيmy newly acquired wealth وَتالِديand my inherited wealth
وَقَد خامَ أَقوامٌ طَريفي وَتالِدي
May Ibn Badr be ransomed, on the day he advanced his cavalry,
In ransom for Ibn Badr the day his horsemen charged,
when others had quailed, by my newly acquired and inherited wealth.
Though clans of mine, Tarif's and Tālid's, wavered.
أَبىthwarted حَقَّthe fulfillment of ماwhat مَنَّتhad promised قُرَيشٌQuraysh نُفوسَهاtheir own selves
أَبى حَقَّ ما مَنَّت قُرَيشٌ نُفوسَها
فَوارِسُhorsemen أَبطالٌheroes طِوالُlong of السَواعِدِforearms
فَوارِسُ أَبطالٌ طِوالُ السَواعِدِ
The fulfillment of what Quraysh had promised themselves was thwarted by
Right's due he claimed; souls of Quraysh would not be spared
heroic horsemen, long of forearm.
When furious heroes, long of arm, pressed forward.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتhave learned خَيلُthe cavalry of اِبنِthe son of خَشعَةَKhashʿa أَنَّهاthat they
وَقَد عَلِمَت خَيلُ اِبنِ خَشعَةَ أَنَّها
مَتىwhenever تَلقَthey encounter يَوماًa day ذاhaving جِلادٍcombat تُجالِدِthey fight
مَتى تَلقَ يَوماً ذا جِلادٍ تُجالِدِ
And Ibn Khashʿa’s cavalry know that
The steeds of Ibn Khasha'a knew that on the day
whenever they face a day of combat, they fight.
Of flashing swords they must engage, must slash and slay.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتhave learned خَيلُthe cavalry of اِبنِthe son of خَشعَةَKhashʿa أَنَّهاthat they
وَقَد عَلِمَت خَيلُ اِبنِ خَشعَةَ أَنَّها
مَتىwhenever تَلقَthey encounter يَوماًon a day غَمرَةًbattle’s turmoil لاnot تُعانِدِthey balk
مَتى تَلقَ يَوماً غَمرَةً لا تُعانِدِ
And Ibn Khashʿa’s cavalry know that
The steeds of Ibn Khasha'a knew that on the day
whenever, on any day, they face the turmoil of battle, they do not balk.
Of gloom and trial they must not disobey.
