شَهِدَbore witness الحُطَيأَةُal-Hutay’ah يَومَon the day يَلقىhe meets رَبَّهُhis Lord
أَنَّthat الوَليدَal-Walid أَحَقُّmore entitled بِالعُذرِto be excused
Al-Hutay’ah bears witness, on the day he meets his Lord,
that al-Walid is more entitled to be excused.
خَلَعواthey took away عِنانَكَyour reins إِذwhen جَرَيتَyou ran وَلَوand if
تَرَكواthey left عِنانَكَyour reins لَمdid not تَزَلyou cease تَجريyou run
They took away your reins as you ran; had
they left your reins alone, you would have kept running.
وَرَأَواand they saw شَمائِلَthe traits of ماجِدٍa noble man أُنُفٍproud
يُعطيhe gives عَلىin المَيسورِprosperity وَالعُسرِand hardship
And they saw the traits of a proud, noble man,
who gives in prosperity and hardship.
فَنُزِعتَso you were removed مَكذوباًwith lies told عَلَيكَagainst you وَلَمand did not
تَنزِعyou incline إِلىtoward طَمَعٍgreed وَلاnor فَقرِpoverty
So you were removed, with lies told against you, though you never
inclined toward greed or poverty.
شَهِدَbore witness الحُطَيئَةُal-Hutay’ah حينَwhen يَلقىhe meets رَبَّهُhis Lord
أَنَّthat الوَليدَal-Walid أَحَقُّmore entitled بِالعُذرِto be excused
Al-Hutay’ah bears witness, when he meets his Lord,
that al-Walid is more entitled to be excused.
نادىhe called out وَقَدand already كَمُلَتwas complete صَلاتُهُمُtheir prayer
أَأَزيدُكُمshall I give you more? ثَمِلاًdrunk وَماand not يَدريhe knows
He called out, when their prayer was complete,
“Shall I give you more?”—drunk and unaware—
لِيَزيدَهُمto give them more خَيراًgood وَلَوand if قَبِلواthey accepted
لَقَرَنتَyou would surely have joined بَينَbetween الشَفعِthe even وَالوِترِand the odd
to give them more good; and had they accepted,
you would surely have joined the even and the odd.
فَأَبَواbut they refused أَباO Abu وَهَبٍWahb وَلَوand if فَعَلواthey had done so
زادَتwould have increased صَلاتُهُمُtheir prayer عَلىbeyond العَشرِten
But they refused, O Abu Wahb; and had they done so,
their prayer would have exceeded ten.
كَفّواthey held back عِنانَكَyour reins إِذwhen جَرَيتَyou ran وَلَوand if
خَلَّواthey let loose عِنانَكَyour reins لَمdid not تَزَلyou cease تَجريyou run
They held back your reins as you ran; had
they let your reins loose, you would have kept running.
