Since your last visit, Sulayma's haunts have changed:
the sandy tracts beyond Rama, then al-Hujul.
أَرَبَّlingered المُدجِناتُthe rain-laden clouds بِهِover it وَجَرَّتand dragged

Rain-laden clouds lingered over it, and there trailed
across it the skirts of a fierce, headlong wind.
وَهاجَand stirred لَكَin you الصَبابَةَyearning مِنfrom هَواهاlove for her

And yearning, born of love for her, was stirred in you
by a weathered campsite at the bend of Quraqir.
كَماjust as هاجَstirred الصَبابَةَyearning يَومَthe day مَرَّتpassed by

As longing stirred the day there passed
the litter-bearing camels, bound toward Waqisah.
فَأُقسِمُso I swear وَهيَwhile she تَنهَضُrises بيwith me إِلَيكُمtoward you all

So I swear—as she bears me toward you,
with pregnant and barren camels at her sides—

by the padded feet of the tethered Mahri camels,
for which leather straps and hoof-pads are fastened:

ah, no sleep for me until she arrives,
a tall, swift-trotting she-camel keeping pace with them,

brisk when the desert wastes all look alike,
stout and strong when midday rest is denied.

Her breast-strap is drawn taut across her hollow middle
by her slender backbone and her massive chest.
إِذاwhen بَلَغَتكَshe reaches you أَلقَتshe casts off ماwhat عَلَيهاis upon her

When she reaches you, she will shed her load;
and you are the best of those whom travel brings near.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you خَيرُthe best of خِندِفَKhindif حينَwhen يَأويbrings to shelter

And you are Khindif's best, when I am brought for shelter
to you by journeying and halting.

When my needs are mentioned to you,
you are neither at a loss over them nor miserly.
