أَتَيتُI came to اِبنُthe son of شَعلٍShaʿl بِالحُشاشَةِat al-Ḥushāsha صادِياًthirsty
وَقَدwhile already رَكَدَتhad grown still يَوماًone day أُصولُthe roots of السَمائِمِthe scorching winds
I came to Ibn Shaʿl at al-Ḥushāsha, parched,
While the roots of the scorching winds lay still that day.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him ياO! اِنقَعquench صَدايَmy thirst بِشَربَةٍwith a draught
مِنَof الماءِwater تُقصيthat will ward off عَنكَfrom you لَومَةَthe reproach of لائِمِa fault-finder
So I said to him, “Come, quench my thirst with a draught
Of water, to spare yourself a fault-finder’s reproach.”
فَقالَso he said اِنتَسِبstate your lineage أَعلَمso I may know مَواقِعَthe destinations of نِعمَتيmy bounty
وَكانَand was القِرىhospitality فيهِمamong them كَحَزِّlike slitting الحَلاقِمِthroats
He said, “State your lineage, so I may know where my bounty falls.”
Hospitality among them was like slitting throats.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him أَمسِكstop فَحَسبُكَso enough for you إِنَّماonly
سَأَلتُكَI asked you for صِرفاًa purebred مِنfrom جِيادِthe finest of الحَزاقِمِthe Ḥazāqim
So I said to him, “Stop—enough! I only
Asked you for a purebred from the finest Ḥazāqim!”
