Al-Rass and al-ʿAlyāʾ lie desolate, bereft of Umm Mālik,

And Bark, and the valley of Wāsiṭ, and Munīm.

In her stead they harbor white-bellied wild asses, gaunt as spears,

Whose braying sounds in the wooded valleys of al-Shurayf.

They drew near and listened closely to the voices of night-talkers

By the water—submerged frogs, softly croaking.

They come to water only when there appear

Stars, with other stars following in their wake.
