قُدامَةُQudāmah أَمسىhas come to be يَعرُكُrubs الجَهلُfolly أَنفَهُhis nose
بِجَدّاءَon barren ground لَمnot يُعرَكwas rubbed بِهاon it أَنفُthe nose of فاخِرِa boaster
Qudāmah now has folly rubbing his nose
on barren ground where no boaster’s nose was ever rubbed.
فَخَرتُمyou boasted وَلَمand not نَعلَمwe knew بِحادِثِof newly occurring مَجدِكُمyour glory
فَهاتِso bring it هَلُمَّcome forward بَعدَهاafter that لِلتَنافُرِto a contest of boasts
You boasted, though we knew of no new glory of yours.
Then bring it! Come, after that, to a contest of boasts.
وَمَنand who أَنتُمُyou إِنّاindeed we نَسيناwe have forgotten مَنَwho اَنتُمُyou
وَريحُكُمُand your wind مِنfrom أَيِّwhich ريحِwind of الأَعاصِرِthe whirlwinds
And who are you? We have forgotten who you are.
And your wind—from which of the whirlwinds does it come?
فَهَذيso this الَّتيwhich تَأتيcomes عَلىalong كُلِّevery مَنهَجٍpath
تَبوعُTabūʿ, a following wind أَمِor القَعواءُthe Qaʿwāʾ wind خَلفَbehind الدَوابِرِthe hindmost
So is this one, which comes along every path,
Tabūʿ, the following wind, or Qaʿwāʾ behind the hindmost?
مَتىwhen جِئتُمُyou came إِنّاindeed we رَأَيناwe saw شُخوصَكُمyour figures
ضِئالاًpuny فَماso there is no إِنat all بَينَناbetween us مِنany تَفاكُرِmutual deliberation
When did you come? We saw your figures
so puny—there is nothing for us to deliberate over.
وَأَنتُمand you أُلىthose who جِئتُمyou came مَعَwith البَقلِthe herbage وَالدَباand the young locusts
فَطارَthen it flew وَهَذاwhile this شَخصُكُمyour figure غَيرُnot طائِرِflying
And you are those who came with the herbage and the young locusts;
then they flew away, but this figure of yours does not fly.
أَريحواgive relief to البِلادَthe lands مِنكُمُof yourselves وَدَبيبُكُمand your creeping
بِأَعراضِناagainst our honor فِعلُthe deed of الإِماءِslave women العَواهِرِwhorish
Rid the lands of yourselves; your creeping attacks
on our honor are the work of whorish slave women.
