وَهَل قَومٌ عَلى خُلُقٍ سَواءُ
Listen! Convey this to the sons of Awf ibn Ka'b—
Should I convey to the clan of ‘Auf ibn Ka’b
and are a people's characters all alike?—
That a people of equal manners are there ever?
عُطارِدَهاtheir Utarid وَبَهدَلَةَand Bahdala بنَson of عَوفٍAwf
عُطارِدَها وَبَهدَلَةَ بنَ عَوفٍ
فَهَلthen will ...? يَشفيheal صُدورَكُمُyour hearts الشِفاءُthe cure
فَهَل يَشفي صُدورَكُمُ الشِفاءُ
to their Utarid and Bahdala ibn Awf:
To ‘Uṭāridah and Bahdalah son of ‘Auf—
will a cure, then, heal your hearts?
Can that bring about healing to your breasts?
أَلَمdid ... not? أَكُI was نائِياًfar away فَدَعَوتُمونيthen you summoned me
أَلَم أَكُ نائِياً فَدَعَوتُموني
فَجاءَthen brought بِيَme المَواعِدُthe promises وَالدُعاءُand the invitation
فَجاءَ بِيَ المَواعِدُ وَالدُعاءُ
Was I not far away, until you summoned me?
Was I not a neighbor, so you drove me out?
Then the promises and the invitation brought me.
Yet appointments came and invitations too.
أَلَمdid ... not? أَكُI was جارَكُمyour neighbor فَتَرَكتُمونيthen you abandoned me
أَلَم أَكُ جارَكُم فَتَرَكتُموني

لِكَلبي في دِيارِكُمُ عُواءُ
Was I not your neighbor, yet you abandoned me,
Was I not your neighbor, whom you abandoned
while my dog howled in your dwellings?
To the howlings of dogs in your quarters?

أَوِ الشِعرى فَطالَ بِيَ العَشاءُ
And I delayed supper until Suhayl appeared,
I brought supper to Suhayl or Sirius
or Sirius; supper was long delayed for me.
And long was the supper to me that night.
وَلَمّاand when كُنتُI was جارَكُمُyour neighbor أَبَيتُمyou refused

And when I was your neighbor, you refused me,
When I was your neighbor, you refused.
and refusal is the worst stance in matters of honor.
Ill-repute is the worst of abodes.
وَلَمّاand when كُنتُI was جارَهُمُtheir neighbor حَبَونيthey gave me gifts

When I was their neighbor, they loved me.
you too had gifts to give, had you wished.
Among you, if you wished, was affection shown.

And when I praised those people, you said,
When I praised that people, you said “he reviles!”
'You have lampooned us, though satire is forbidden you.'
Yet reviling is not sanctioned for you.

Was I not one protected, while between us
and you affection and brotherhood?
Lay affection and brotherhood pure?

I did not insult your ancestral honor, but
Yet I cursed you not in lineage, but in fervor—
sang where the camel-driver's song is heeded.
Wherein listening to malediction is allowed.

No, by your father, Quray' did no wrong
Nay, Quray‘ did no wrong in daring
in building noble deeds wherever they pleased.
To build nobilities wheresoever they would!

Nay, Quray‘ perpetrated no wrong.
nor did they weary of that or act amiss,
They built not that for any ill or foul intent.

in repairing their neighbor's stumble,
That a neighbor of theirs stumbled, so they might aid
so that camels and sheep might remain around him,
And restore him: breeds and cattle round him increase.

and he might build their glory and dwell among them,
He builds his glory and settles amidst it,
and gain more livestock, if such increase is wished for him.
While if a walk is wanted of him, he can walk!

For a neighbor, like a guest, sets out
For a neighbor is like a guest who comes early
for his destination, however long his stay.
Unto his destination, however long the separation.

And I have grasped the rope of a people
And I’ve clung to the rope of a folk helped on
whose wealth has helped them uphold their honor.
By affluence in repute, annals, and fame.

بِمالِ الجارِ ذَلِكُمُ الوَفاءُ
They stand surety, against the strokes of death,
They share in deaths by giving of their wealth.
for a neighbor's wealth: that is fidelity.
That is true loyalty in them expressed!

They heal the head's very core when
They give succor when crisis plagues the woman—
doctors and healers leave it to one another.
The helpless, if forsaken by her guardian.

They are the people who, when there comes
They're the folk, if times bring darkness o'er some wretch,
a dark calamity from time, bring light.
Shed light for him till sights can be regained!

They are the people whom you have known
They're the folk whom you know, if the plea goes up,
beside the caller when the banner is raised.
And the banners for aid are lifted high.

When winter descends upon a people's dwelling,
If winter befalls the land of any clan,
winter shuns the dwelling of their household.
Its coldness shuns their abode for sure.
فَأَبقواso show mercy لاno أَباfather لَكُمُfor you عَلَيهِمtoward them

فَإِنَّ مَلامَةَ المَولى شَقاءُ
So spare them—may you have no father!—
So omit reproach against them, I do swear—
for reproaching a kinsman is misery.
The Most High's blame is such sore evil!

For their nearest forefather is your father,
For their meanest father, yours is the same.
and their hearts bear no ill will toward you.
In their breasts lies yours—pure, sacrosanct.

Their now waning moon, for you is waning.
and their loyalty is loyalty for you.
Their loyalty: yours too, bequeathed avowed!

And their proven valor is what you have already known
You know well their tests—if tests can profit—
through the days, if valor is of use.
Meted out over days, the destined plow!

And many a weakness of yours they have mended
and among you there was no defense apart from them,
Beyond which among you there was no aid found!

with a mighty host in which the gaze is bewildered,
With a throng so confusing to sight that the eyes
that leaves the open plain choked by its mass.
Still peer to where sky meets vacant horizon!

And when I called Baghid to it,
And when I invoked, for one I hated “ill,”
he came to me as soon as the summons reached his ears.
He came to me when my prayer was heard.

You surpassed men through two qualities,
You surpassed men in two traits you inherited
which you inherited as allegiance is inherited.
As loyalty itself is bequeathed allowed.

So you gave freely with flowing, ample bounty,
You blazed with an ardor, a flood not restrained—
mingled with protective zeal and modesty.
Deft mixing of propriety and temerity.

Keener, then, than an Athrabi spearhead
So too a lance of the keenest iron shine
with which you thrust when advancing is dreaded.
You thrust, when thrusting cannot be foregone!

When his hands aggress toward a well-clad neck,
he will not stop, even if rebuked.
Checked by none, though chastised oft before.

I said, 'Umam, consolation has been defeated.'
“Ummāmah, consolation here is overthrown!”

When tears overflow from the eye,
If tears should burst forth from these eyes of mine
I say, 'A mote is in it'—but it is weeping.
I say they're a speck—though in fact they're crying!

When a man spends the night with a leak above him
I swear your habit stays not, if one night falls
from time's calamities, with no shelter,
With events that match it there are none.

The same, however long his life's prolongation.

against fate's vagaries, which have beset him in turn,
Death hand-to-handed wrestled him about,
then consumed him, though they never perish.
Vanquishing him—and death has no destruction!

When youth departs and parts from him,
When youth departs and something of it yet shows
there is no reunion with what has gone from him.
There is no tryst between it and return.

He yearns for life and desires it,
He yearns for life and covets it, while in
yet in long life there is suffering for him.
A lengthened lifespan for him is agony!

ذَلولٌ حينَ تَهتَرِشُ الضِراءُ
One of its burdens is that a camel is led with him aboard,
Of it: that a docile camel by him is led
a docile one, while the fierce beasts fight.
When senility brings hardship, not affluence.
وَمِنهاand among its burdens أَنthat يَنوءَhe rises laboriously عَلىupon يَدَيهِhis two hands

Another is that he struggles up upon his hands,
And of it: he rests his weight upon both hands
and rises with a bend about his collarbones.
And rises in his rising wearily bent.

وَليدُ الحَيِّ في يَدِهِ الرِداءُ
And a tottering gait seizes him when he is guided
Decrepitude seizes him if it but leads
by a child of the tribe, the cloak in his hand.
As a newborn weakly clings to his cloak.

And he looks around him and sees his sons,
He looks around to see his sons—poor shelters—
one encampment, with another encampment behind them.
While shelter from them is what he sees behind!

And he swears an oath to his sons' sons
He swears an oath to the sons of his sons
that they have reached evening thirsty, though they have drunk their fill.
That they'll lie down thirsting—and they water-replete!
وَيَأمُرُand he orders بِالجِمالِconcerning the camels فَلاso not تُعَشّىare given evening grazing

And he orders that the camels not be given evening grazing
He orders the camels' loading, though night has come.
when he reaches evening, though feeding time is near.
And nightfall is no matter to him at all.

for winter breaks the old man down;
An elder wrecked entirely by the cold!

A light robe or cloak is his need instead.

The woman in the howdah says to him, 'Keep away from me
The pregnant she-camel says “Please spare me, sir,
your camel,' when it is of no use.
Your camel!” though no song is left in her.
