فَالشِعرُfor poetry صَعبٌdifficult وَطَويلٌand long سُلَّمُهits ladder
إِذاif اِرتَقىclimbs فيهِin it الَّذيthe one who لاnot يَعلَمُهknows it
For poetry is difficult, and its ladder is long.
If one who does not know it climbs it,
زَلَّتslips بِهِwith him إِلىto الحَضيضِthe depths قَدَمُهhis foot
وَالشِعرُand poetry لاnot يَسطَيعُهُcan master it مَنone who يَظلِمُهwrongs it
His foot slips, taking him down to the depths.
And poetry cannot be mastered by one who wrongs it.

He wishes to express it clearly, but makes it obscure.
And he never ceases to guard it, wherever he comes from.

Whoever brands enemies—his brand endures.
