Generosity lives as long as Amr ibn Amir lives.
The bounty lived as long as ‘Amr son of ‘Aamir lived,
And generosity turns away if Amr's soul departs.
And turned away when the soul of ‘Amr turned away.
حَليفَally of النَدىgenerosity لَمّاwhen تَوَلّىdeparted خَلاwas left desolate النَدىgenerosity
فَماتَتso died عَطاياgifts المُكثِرينَthe wealthy وَقَلَّتِand dwindled
Generosity's ally—when he departed, generosity was left desolate.
After ‘Amr, the ally of bounty, turned away, bounty became scarce.
So the gifts of the wealthy died and dwindled.
So the gifts of the frequent givers diminished and became rare.
تَوارىvanished from sight النَدىgenerosity لَمّاwhen تَوارَتwere hidden عِظامُهُhis bones
فَأَعظِمso how great! بِهاby them (his bones) فيamong المُعتَفينَthose seeking bounty وَجَلَّتِand were exalted
Generosity vanished from sight when his bones were hidden.
The bounty was veiled when his bones were veiled.
So how great they were among those seeking bounty, and how exalted!
So it became mightiest among the revered and most precious.
فَلَولاso were it not for بَقاياsurvivors مِنamong بَنيهِhis sons وَرَهطِهِand his clan

So, were it not for survivors among his sons and his clan,
If it were not for the remnants of his children and his tribe,
Faces among Thaqif would have been humbled and abased.
Faces of (the tribe of) Thaqeef would have been humiliated and disgraced.
