وَيحَكِ أَمثالُ طَريفٍ قَليل
I said to her truthfully, urging her to be patient:
I told her I'd be patient with her truthfully
Alas for you! Few are the likes of Tarif.
Though the likes of witty Tarif are few

وَيَنفَسُ الجودَ عَلَيهِ البَخيل
A noble man may fall short of his deeds,
The brave may fall short of their deeds
And the miser begrudges him his generosity.
While the stingy exhale generosity over him

That is a young man who freely gives the contents of his pot;
That lad gives freely of his worth
No decay spoils the meat in his keeping.
Unmarred meat won't spoil from vinegar for him

عِزٌّ تَليدٌ وَعِنانٌ طَويل
What brought him to a young man's worthy deeds
May it convey to him--the lad's quest--
Was inherited honor and a long rein.
Glory, ancestry, and long reign
