I recognized dwellings of Hind's family,

    effaced between al-Mu'abbal and al-Shawiyy.

Their days are long past, and over them has swept

    wind-blown dust upon wind-blown dust.

After the tribe's trampling there, you see them

like the border of a Himyarite cloak.

Do you hide your love for Hind from everyone?

Yet by doing so you conceal no secret.

She was nurtured among doorways and houses,

watered by the coolness of an evening rain-cloud.

Pampered, you cherish what you have of her,

as you would cherish a Shar'abi cloak.

    Her bedfellow remains fragrant, bearing

a clinging trace of pungent musk.

The fortunate man shares her life; never will you see

an unfortunate man's fortune consort with one like her.

So nothing is yours but gazing at her,

as the poor man gazes at the rich.

So carry to 'Amir a message from me,

the message of a sincere adviser concerned for you.

So beware the snake in a valley's depths,

    piercing-fanged, whom you cannot match.

So settle in the valley-bottom of 'Uqmah and keep clear of us,

as far as Najran, in a spacious land.

For many a fine abode has been thrown open

for their people by the spears of Banu 'Adi!

It was certainly not through affection; rather,

they seized them with solid Samhari spears,

and every ample coat of tightly woven, supple mail,

double-woven, and a bright Mashrafi sword,

and an evenly jointed spear, as though within it were

the leading flight-feather of a mighty, broad-shouldered eagle.

When their foremost ranks came forth one day,

clamoring with the jinn of 'Abqar,

they defended the saltwort's growing grounds until

the saltwort rose above the mouths of the wells.

For two years, through the summers, they held off wily foes

at those broad wells of al-Nafi.

Are you angry that al-Qahd is driven among you?

Then who weeps for the people of al-Sajisi?
