ذَكَرتَyou recalled ثَرىmoist earth نَواظِرَNawazir وَالخُزامىand the lavender
فَكادَso nearly القَلبُthe heart يَنصَدِعُsplits apart اِنصِداعاa splitting
You recalled the moist earth of Nawazir and the lavender,
You recalled the dwellings of Nawazir and Al-Khuzama
so the heart nearly split asunder.
My heart almost ruptured with such recollection
أُلامُI am blamed عَلىfor الصَبابَةِpassionate longing وَالمَهارىand the Mahri camels
تَحِنُّthey yearn إِذاwhen تَذَكَّرَتِthey remember النِزاعاseparation
I am blamed for passionate longing, though the Mahri camels
Sorrow for youth and skill are pains
yearn when they remember separation.
That ache when the feuds of past are reflected
رَأَينَthey saw تَغَيُّريmy altered state فَذُعِرنَso they were startled مِنهُby it
كَذُعرِlike the fright caused by الفارِسِthe horseman البَقَرَthe cattle الرِتاعاgrazing
They saw my altered state and were startled by it,
Seeing my change, they panicked
like grazing cattle startled by a horseman.
Like a knight whose trained horse shies
كَأَنَّas though الرَحلَthe saddle فَوقَupon قَراthe back of جَفولٍa swift vessel
أَقامَraised الماتِحانِthe two oarsmen لَهُfor it الشِراعاthe sail
As though the saddle rested on the back of a swift vessel,
As if the caravan above a barren valley
for which the two oarsmen had raised the sail.
Where sailors have spread the sails
ذَكَرتُI recalled إِذاwhen نَظَرتُI looked إِلىat يَدَيهاher two forelegs
يَدَيthe two hands of عَسراءَa left-handed woman شَمَّرَتِshe drew up القِناعاthe veil
When I looked at her forelegs, I recalled
When I looked upon her hands
the hands of a left-handed woman who had drawn up her veil.
The hands of a beauty who has donned the veil
سَماrose عَبدُAbd (servant) العَزيزِal-Aziz (the Mighty) إِلىto المَعاليthe heights of honor
وَفاتَand surpassed العالَمينَall people نَدىًgenerosity وَباعاand reach
Abd al-Aziz rose to the heights of honor,
Glory unto Abdel Aziz and his great deeds
and surpassed all people in generosity and reach.
Surpassing mankind in fame and worth
أَلَستَare you not اِبنَthe son of الأَئِمَّةِthe leaders مِنof قُرَيشٍQuraysh
وَأَرحَبَهاand the broadest of them بِمَكرُمَةٍin noble deeds ذِراعاin arm's reach
Are you not the son of the leaders of Quraysh,
Art not thou a son of the Imams of Quraish
and the most open-handed among them in noble deeds?
And most generous of them in giving and breadth
فَقَدfor indeed أَوصىcharged الوَليدُal-Walid أَخاa man of حِفاظٍsteadfast loyalty
فَماso he did not نَسِيَforget الوَصاةَthe charge وَلاnor أَضاعاneglect it
For al-Walid charged a man of steadfast loyalty,
For Al-Walid entrusted you, a keeper of trusts
so he neither forgot the charge nor neglected it.
Never forgetting bequests or losing their wealth
إِذاwhen جَدَّbecame urgent الرَحيلُdeparture بِناfor us فَرُحناand we set out
فَنَسأَلُthen we ask ذاthe Possessor of الجَلالِmajesty بِكَthrough you المَتاعاbenefit
When departure presses upon us and we set out,
When the caravan calls us, we rejoice
then we ask the Lord of Majesty to let us benefit from you.
Asking the Majestic to provide you its goods
