إِذاwhenever أَعرَضواthey display أَلفَينِtwo thousand مِنهاfrom it تَعَرَّضَتarises
إِذا أَعرَضوا أَلفَينِ مِنها تَعَرَّضَت
لِأُمِّfor Umm حَكيمٍHakim حاجَةٌa longing فيin فُؤادِياmy heart
لِأُمِّ حَكيمٍ حاجَةٌ في فُؤادِيا
Whenever they display two thousand from there, there stirs
When they turned away two thousand strong, I stood my ground
a longing for Umm Hakim in my heart.
For the mother of Hakim there is a need in my heart
لَقَدindeed زِدتِyou have increased أَهلَthe people of الرِيِّRayy عِنديin my eyes مَلاحَةًbeauty
لَقَد زِدتِ أَهلَ الرِيِّ عِندي مَلاحَةً
وَحَبَّبتِand you have made dear أَضعافاًmany times over إِلَيَّto me المَوالِياthe clients (mawali)
وَحَبَّبتِ أَضعافاً إِلَيَّ المَوالِيا
You have indeed made the people of Rayy lovelier in my eyes,
Indeed, in my eyes you have made the genteel more refined
and made the clients many times dearer to me.
And endeared the loyal many times over
