Today your neighbors have resolved to depart,
Today your neighbor departed on a journey
and you have no wish for parting at Dhu al-ʿUshr.
Do not yearn for the one who packs up and leaves

Stop, you two; turn aside to the old camp-traces at Rahba,
Stand crookedly over a desolate abode
then greet their traces, even if they have changed.
And bid it farewell though it departs
وَشَبَّهتُand I likened الحُدوجَthe camel-litters غَداةَthe morning of قَوٍّQaww

And I likened the camel-litters, that morning at Qaww,
At daybreak, I likened the sand dunes
to Indian ships setting out at evening from Awal.
To an Indian ship sailing away

They set their course to the right of Shatib,
They took to the right, deviating from the shore
and to the left of the rocky uplands of Dhu Baqar.
And to the left, away from the mountains
جَمَعنَthey combined لَناfor us مَواعِدَpromises مُعجِباتٍenticing

They mingled for us enticing promises
They brought us wondrous gatherings
with stinginess that denied your wish, and excuses.
And were stingy without being asked or weakened

Charming women who had never lived a life of hardship
Companions who lived no wretched life
renew their promises and their delays.
Renewing trysts and promises
فَقَدfor indeed أَفنَينَthey exhausted عُمرَكَyour life كُلَّevery يَومٍday
بِوَعدٍwith a promise ماnot جَزَينَthey repaid بِهِwith it قِبالاa return
For they have consumed your life, day after day,
You spent your days, each one
with a promise for which they gave no return.
With a promise they never kept
وَلَوand if يَهوَينَthey desired ذاكَthat سَقَينَthey gave drink عَذباًsweet water

And had they desired that, they would have given you sweet water,
Had they craved that, they'd have watered
despite the hindrances, now and then, crystal-clear.
The peaks from hilltop springs
وَلَكِنَّbut الحُماةَthe guardians حَمَوكَbarred you عَنهُfrom it

But the guardians barred you from it,
But zealots kept you from it
so, despite your thirst, you are given not a drop.
So you weren't sated when parched

Will you not requite my love through nights
Does my devotion those nights and days
and long days I bound together with that love?
Of long loyalty not suffice?
أُحِبُّI love الظاعِنينَthose departing غَداةَthe morning of قَوٍّQaww

I love those who departed that morning at Qaww,
I love the stragglers at daybreak
and I do not love the dwellers encamped there.
And desire not those who settle

Indeed your tears streamed the day they brought back
You shed tears the day they returned
the camels for the tribe's departure, then loaded them.
To the abode, bearing their burdens

And among the departing litters were women like the oryx of Rumah;
The doe-eyed ones are like lances
they set traps and snares for him.
Aimed at me, cords and snares set out

They did not miss the vital mark when they shot at my heart
They did not hesitate, shooting my heart
with arrows whose shafts they had not feathered,
With arrows needing no feathering

Rather, with their eyes and cheeks
you fancy burnished for its radiant beauty.
Adorned as if with fine necklaces

By your life, nearness to Hind brings you nothing—
By your life! Their nearness increases you not
when you visit her—but madness.
Except in anxiety and inner turmoil

And the tale-bearers spoke, alarming us
Evil tongues alarmed us
with some words we hate to hear uttered.
With some unpleasant words

I saw you, O Ukhaytil, when we raced,
I saw you, brother, when we raced
and, when horsemanship was tested, you proved inept.
And horsemanship was tested, you excelled

And al-Farazdaq was goaded after much effort,
Al-Farazdaq tired after straining
so he threw down his bow when he tired of the archery contest.
And cast aside his bow, exhausted in the fight

And we are the superior ones; on what day
We are the superior ones, so what day
can you say the Taghlibi hoped for preeminence?
Will the Taghlibi claim excellence?
أَلَمdid not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat عِزَّglory بَنيthe sons of تَميمٍTamim

He built for them firmly rooted, towering mountains,
He built them lofty pillars
and God raised its summit, so it stood tall.
And God elevated their peaks high

Every bright-faced Khindifi built up my glory,
Every blossoming Khindif built me a home
vying with the north wind within his pavilion.
Rivaling the north wind in its canopy

All creation serves him while he stands exalted,
The desert divides its bounty with him
and by evening all people are his dependents.
While all people are his dependents by night

The mighty chiefs bowed before a Khindifi
The warlords submitted to Khindif
who, when we wish, bristles with rage, then charges.
When we desired, he tossed and turned

And the Taghlibi hastens whenever we make our levy,
And the Taghlibi strives when we call him
with his tribute, awaiting the crescent moon.
Awaiting the new moon with his tribute

You met Qays's cavalry in al-Jazira,
You met the horses of Qays on the island
so you said, 'Mar Sergius! No fighting!'
And said, "These are pack-saddles, not for war!"

No cavalry of yours stood firm against cavalry,
You have no horses with patience for horses
nor were your men of any use to men.
Nor do your men match their men

You surrendered Shu'ayth bin Mulayl
the sword struck his shoulder, so he slumped.
Whose shoulder was struck by the sword in defeat

so may your drunken bouts bring you no peace of mind!
With no joy left in intoxication

The Taghlibi woman, drunk, sniffs
Drunk Taghlibi women stumble
the pig's nape, thinking it a gazelle.
Mistaking the rump of a pig for a gazelle

The wine keeps making her two neck-veins twitch,
Wine keeps churning violently in their brains
and she complains of numbness in her legs.
And they complain of humiliation in their steps

Do you think your mother's copper coin was glory,
Do you reckon your mother's vulva was glory?
and your shearing thick wool from the short-legged sheep?
It dragged you away from decent money

Reach for what you found your father building;
Take what you found your father possessed, my son
but as for the Khindifi, you will never attain him.
As for the Khindifi, you can never attain him

Is not Abu Al-Ukht Bilal Taghlibi?
So wretched is a Taghlibi as father and maternal uncle!
What a foul Taghlibi father and uncle!

If your uncle is Taghlibi
then exchange him, if you find a replacement for him.
Barter him if you can find a replacement

And Yarbuʿ dwells on the summits of the hills,
While Warbooh frequents the open plains
and builds tall pillars above them.
Building columns over them

And al-Ukhaytil has clung to a rope of misfortune;
Al-Ukhtal tied the rope of disgrace
so their day weighed heavily on him and dragged on.
So his day amongst them was prolonged

Pass by when you seek its causes?

If your intoxication does not subside, then taste
the swords of India and the thirsty spears.
The Indian swords and piercing blades!
