The phantom came by—how rare its visits to you!
So return your visitor's greeting with a greeting.
فَلَقَدfor indeed أَنىthe time has come لَكَfor you أَنthat تُوَدِّعَyou bid farewell to خُلَّةًa love
فَنِيَتit has perished وَكانَand were حِبالُهاits bonds أَرماماrotten remnants
For it is time for you to bid farewell to a love
That has died, its bonds reduced to rotten remnants.
فَلَئِنfor if صَدَرتَyou depart لَتَصدُرَنَّyou will surely depart بِحاجَةٍin need
وَلَئِنand if سُقيتَyou are given drink لَطالَhas indeed lingered ذاthis one تَحواماcircling the water
For if you depart, you will surely depart still wanting;
And if you are given drink, long has this one circled the water.

To catch a mange-carrier's taint and incur blame?

From Masit, while she browsed on saltwort!

To sitting and dwelling among the sons of Hudayyah.

And when I take aim at you all, you are
Neither submissive nor dear to me.

And you have indeed suffered hardship from our war,
Which descended upon you and threw its weight upon you.

And a goring foe has indeed struck the sons of Hudayyah;
And I have indeed been sent against al-Baʿith as inescapable torment.
