أَخاًa brother ياO عُروَʿUrwa كُنتَyou were لَهُمfor them جِماعاa unifying bond
May you be rewarded with blessings, a brother to a people—
You were rewarded with blessings, O brother of a people
a brother, O ʿUrwa—you were their unifying bond.
O Urwa you were a leader for them
وَثَغرٍand many a frontier قَدindeed شَهِدتَyou were present at فَلَمand did not تُضِعهُneglect it
وَلَولاand were it not for ماthe fact that شَهِدتَyou were present لَكانَit would have been ضاعاlost
And many a frontier you manned and did not neglect;
And a gaping wound you witnessed but did not expose
but for your presence, it would have been lost.
Had you not witnessed it, it would have been lost
وَكَمand how many مِنof مَأزِقٍa perilous strait جَلَّيتَyou brought deliverance عَنهُfrom it
إِذاwhen كانَwere الرِجالُthe men بِهِwithin it رَعاعاa rabble
And how many a perilous strait you delivered them from,
And how many straits did you clear from it
when the men within it were a rabble.
When the men were with it commoners
تَخَيَّرَتِsingled out المَناياthe fates of death يَومَon the day زارَتthey visited
نَواصِيَناour forelocks تُقَمِّعُهاsubduing them اِنقِماعاinto submission
Death singled out, on the day it visited,
Death chose when it visited
our forelocks, crushing them into submission.
Our foreheads it lowers them in submission
