لَقَدindeed هَتَفَcalled out اليَومَtoday الحَمامُthe doves لِيُطرِباto stir yearning
وَعَنّىand wearied طِلابُpursuit of الغانِياتِthe fair women وَشَيِّباand made gray
Indeed, today the doves called out to stir yearning;
The dove has cooed today to give delight,
and the pursuit of fair women has wearied me and turned me gray.
And lovers of songs have found their gray hair white,
وَأَجمَعنَand they resolved مِنكَfrom you النَفرَflight مِنfrom غَيرِabsence of ريبَةٍmisgiving
كَماjust as ذَعَرَstartled الراميthe archer بِفَيحانَat Fayhan رَبرَباa herd of wild cattle
And they resolved to flee from you, without misgiving,
Your band has assembled, of that there is no doubt,
as the archer at Fayhan startled a herd of wild cattle.
As the archer startles the hopping Rabrāb.
عَجِبتُI marveled لِماat what يَفريrends الهَوىpassion يَومَon the day of مَنعِجٍMan‘ij
وَيَوماًand a day بِأَعلىin the upper reaches of عاقِلٍ‘Aqil كانَwas أَعجَباmore astonishing
I marveled at passion's ravages on the day at Man‘ij,
I wonder at passion’s heat on a day of coolness,
and a day in upper ‘Aqil was more astonishing still.
And at reason’s height on a day most wondrous,
وَأَحبَبتُand I loved أَهلَthe people of الغَورِal-Ghawr (the lowlands) مِنout of حُبِّlove of ذيDhu فَناًFana
وَأَحبَبتُand I loved سُلمانَينَSulmanayn مِنout of حُبِّlove of زَينَباZaynab
And I loved the people of al-Ghawr for love of Dhu Fana,
I love the people of the vale for the love of an artful one,
and I loved Sulmanayn for love of Zaynab.
And I love two Sulaymāns for loving Zainab,
يُحَيّونَthey greet هِنداًHind وَالحِجابانِand the two veils دونَهاbefore her
بِنَفسِيَwith my life as ransom أَهلٌworthy أَنto تُحَيّاbe greeted وَتُحجَباand be veiled
They greet Hind, with two veils between them and her;
They bid India live, though veils are before her,
my life be her ransom: she is worthy to be greeted and veiled.
With my life! A people to be greeted and veiled!
تَذَكَّرتَyou remembered وَالذِكرىand remembrance تَهيجُكَstirs you وَاِعتَرىand came upon
خَيالٌa phantom بِمَوماةٍin a desert waste حَراجيجَlean she-camels لُغَّباexhausted
You remembered—remembrance stirs you—and there came
You remembered, and memory excited you, moved you,
a phantom to lean, exhausted she-camels in a desert waste.
A phantom of Maymūnah fluttered you confusedly.
لَئِنeven if سَكَنَتrested تَيمٌTaym زَماناًfor a time بِغِرَّةٍin heedlessness
لَقَدindeed حُدِيَتwas driven by song تَيمٌTaym حُداءًa driving chant عَصَبصَباfierce
Even if Taym rested heedlessly for a time,
If Taym lived tranquilly for a time in the valley,
Taym has indeed been driven by a fierce driving chant.
Taym were incited to glowing, kindled strife.
لَقَدindeed مَدَّنيendowed me عَمروٌ‘Amr وَزَيدٌand Zayd مِنَfrom الثَرىthe soil
بِأَكثَرَwith more مِمّاthan what عِندَis possessed by تَيمٍTaym وَأَطيَباand better
‘Amr and Zayd have indeed endowed me from the soil
‘Amr and Zaid have surpassed Taym in generosity
with more, and better, than Taym possesses.
With more wealth than Taym has, and better.
إِذاwhen اِعتَرَكَjostled الأَورادُthe watering parties ياO تَيمُTaym لَمnot تَجِدyou find
عِناجاًa bucket's supporting rope وَلاnor حَبلاًa rope بِدَلوِكَon your bucket مُكرَباfirmly fastened
When the watering parties jostle, O Taym, you will not find
When, O Taym, the thorn-bushes clash, you will not find
a supporting rope beneath your bucket, nor a firmly secured cord.
Either rope or bucket for your well sweep.
وَأَعلَقتُand I fastened أَقرانيmy rivals بِتَيمٍto Taym لَقَدindeed لَقواthey encountered
قَطوعاًa relentless severer لِأَعناقِof the necks of القَرائِنِyoked companions مِجذَباa forceful puller
And I fastened my rivals to Taym; they have indeed met
I have linked my peers to Taym; truly they have encountered
one who severs yokefellows' necks and pulls hard.
Beheadings of their neck-pendants brought low.
وَلَوand even if غَضِبَتgrew angry ياO تَيمُTaym أَوor زُيِّلَwere separated الحَصاthe pebbles
عَلَيكَagainst you تَميمٌTamim لَمnot تَجِدyou find لَكَfor you مَغضَباan angry defender
And even if, O Taym, there were anger—or the pebbles were scattered—
If Taym were angry, O Taym, or Taym’s power declined,
from Tamim against you, you would find none angered on your behalf.
Tamīm would not find you wrathful.
وَماand not تَعرِفونَyou recognize الشَمسَthe sun إِلّاexcept لِغَيرِكُمbelonging to others than you
وَلاnor مِنamong مُنيراتِthe shining الكَواكِبِthe stars كَوكَباa star
And you recognize the sun only as belonging to others,
You recognize the sun only for others’ sake,
and not one star among the shining stars as your own.
Nor of the shining heavenly bodies a star.
فَإِنَّfor indeed لَناwe have عَمراً‘Amr وَسَعداًand Sa‘d عَلَيكُمُabove you
وَقَمقامَand the great lord of زَيدٍZayd وَالصَريحَand the pure-born المُهَذَّباthe unblemished one
For ours are ‘Amr and Sa‘d, above you,
For we have a life and Sa‘d over you,
and Zayd's great lord, and the pure-born, unblemished one.
And Qamqam of Zaid and his burnished Serīĥ.
سَأُثنيI shall praise عَلىon تَيمٍTaym بِماwith what لاnot يَسُرُّهاpleases her
إِذاwhen أَركُبٌriding parties وافَواmet بِنَعمانَat Na‘man أَركُباriding parties
I shall praise Taym with what will not please her,
I will praise Taym with what will not please her
when riding parties meet riding parties at Na‘man.
If the Arkūb outstrip Nā‘mān’s riders.
فَإِنَّكَfor you indeed لَوif ضَمَّتكَclasped you ياتَيمُO Taym ضَمَّةًa clasp
مَناكِبُthe shoulders of زَيدٍZayd لَمnot تُرِدyou wish أَنto تَوَثَّباleap up
For if you were clasped, O Taym, in a single embrace
For were you, O Taym, to be embraced by Zaid’s shoulders,
by Zayd's shoulders, you would not wish to spring up.
You would not wish to bound up.
فَوَدَّتso wished نِساءُthe women of الدارِمِيِّنَthe Darimis لَوif only تَرىthey might see

Then the Darimi women wished they could see
The women of the Dārim desired, would you but see,
‘Utayba, or behold Qa‘nab among the cavalry.
‘Utbah or spy him among the horses snorting.
أَزَيدَO Zayd بنَson of عَبدِservant of اللَهِGod هَلّاwhy not مَنَعتُمُyou protected
أُمامَةَUmama يَومَon the day of الحارِثِيِّal-Harithi وَزَينَباand Zaynab
O Zayd son of ‘Abd Allah, why did you not protect
Tell Ziyād ibn ‘Abdullāh, why did you not forbid
Umama and Zaynab on the day of al-Harithi?
Ummāmah on the day of the Hārithī and Zainab?
أَخَيلُكَyour horses? أَمor خَيليmy horses تَدارَكنَthey overtook هانِئًHani’

Was it your horses or mine that overtook Hani’,
Was it your horses or mine that came to the aid of Hāni’,
raising tawny dust at al-Ghabitayn?
Stirring up dust clouds with the two Ghabītān?
فَهَلso, is? جَدعُnose-cutting of تَيمٍTaym لاno أَبالَكَa father for you زاجِرٌa deterrent
كَنانَةَKinana أَوor ناهٍrestraining زُهَيراًZuhayr وَتَولَباand Tawlab
So will the cutting off of Taym's nose—may you have no father!—deter
Is there no valorous Jinn of Taym to check
Kinana, or restrain Zuhayr and Tawlab?
Kunānah or Nāhih, Zuheir and Taulab?
فَلاso let not يَضغَمَنَّseize in its jaws اللَيثُthe lion عُكلاً‘Ukl بِغِرَّةٍunawares
وَعُكلٌwhile ‘Ukl يَشِمّونَthey sniff الفَريسَthe prey المُنَيَّباthe fanged one
So let not the lion seize ‘Ukl in its jaws unawares,
Let not the lion fret ‘Ukl, inexperienced,
while ‘Ukl sniff at the fanged prey.
While ‘Ukl scent the prey with twitching nostrils.
وَأُخبِرتُand I was told تَيماًTaym نادِمينَregretful فَسَرَّنيso it pleased me

And I was told that Taym were regretful, so I was pleased by
I was told that the people of Taym were sorry, and it delighted me -
Taym's self-reproach over her conduct, reconsidered afterward.
Taym’s being blamed by those who emulate her.
