Have Dhu al-Sidr and al-Thalam gone, or do they remain?
Whether the possessor of the jujube tried or not
That love is neither near you nor within reach.
That passion for you is neither close nor distant
إِنَّindeed طِلابَكَyour pursuit شَيئاًsomething لَستَyou are not نائِلَهُattaining it

Indeed, your pursuit of something you will not attain
Your pursuers seek something you cannot attain
is folly; prolonged longings of love are an illness.
Ignorance and prolonged passion are sickly and feeble

O my two reproachers, lessen your blame; before you,
O you who blame me, reproach less before we both
the slanderers spoke: some were unheeded, others mistrusted.
Say, “The shepherd was disobedient and suspect”

Indeed, at Burqat Sulmanayn, I was delighted
With the lightning of Sulamis I was adorned
by her coquettish grace and smile when she appeared one morning.
At dawn it appeared a guide, smiling

You reminded us of a Darin perfumer's musk, richly fragrant,
It reminded me of the musk of a Darite house
and lavender at al-Hani, whose dew is gentle rain.
And the perfumed Khuzama whose tresses are spears

I loaded my saddle, through terrors, onto a swift she-camel,
I loaded my saddle despite the terrors imploring
like a tormented breeding stallion worn thin by anguish.
Like the articulate leper whose lips are split

One of those whose eyes gaze far ahead; whenever
With awed sights from battles when banners bowed down
a mountain's summits sank from her sight, they said, 'Another mountain appears.'
The banners they said appeared from their standards’ dust

blessings flow, with neither stinginess nor want.
Days flow without stinginess or lack

To the most generous whose supererogations are hoped for
when delegations crowd his gates.
When delegations crowded his doors

They came thirsty; their buckets have been filled
They came thirsty so his rivers quenched them
by a shared flood surging from the torrent.
An overflowing stream equitably divided

Raise my two feathered wings, for already
Raise your wings within your feathers they have returned
favors from your fathers have restored both wings' feathers.
The feathers of both wings from your noble fathers

You are the son of good Abd al-Aziz: neither rash
You're the son of Abdel Aziz, benevolent, no fatigue
with youth's inexperience, nor diminished by old age.
Overwhelms your youth, nor does old age diminish you

Quraysh and the Prophet's Helpers pray for him,
Quraysh and the Prophet's helpers beseech him
that they may long enjoy Abu Hafs; they have done no wrong.
To enjoy Abi Hafs and they have not been wronged

They went to salute one whose qualities are praised,
They went to greet Mahmoud, his traits
smooth-browed, with a lofty bridge to his nose.
Who prayed with his forehead touching the ground

They look to you, with no fear of injustice,
They hope from you without fearing injustice
for bounty; steady rains pour down from your generosity.
As befits tradition, your favors rain upon them

Through you, God gave life to peoples, and you became for them
Through you Allah revived people so you were their
the land's light, by which darkness is dispelled.
Light of the land which illuminates the darkness

مَروانُ ذو النورِ وَالفاروقُ وَالحَكَمُ
You have found no grandfather like the forebears he counts:
You met no ancestors like those he counts
Marwan, Dhu al-Nur, al-Faruq, and al-Hakam.
Marwan of light, the Farouq, and the Wise

You resemble Umar al-Faruq in his conduct:
You resembled Omar Al-Farouq in his conduct
he established the prescribed duties, and the nations fulfilled them through him.
Who established duties and the nations were completed

You found your house upon the heights, made firm
You built your home in Alia solidly founded
by its foundation, with no breach in its wall.
The finest of buildings whose enclosure has no breach

And your thicket entwined among thickets above hills,
Your family gathered in Ays above neighbors
for which the great channels of al-Abtah flow.
For them run springs from the vast meadows

And in Quda'a is a house of unmixed lineage:
In Quda'a is an unadorned house
excellent ancient stock, when ancestry is examined.
Excellent is old age when white hair is attained

And in Tamim he has might—a mighty lion,
In Tamim are honor and courage
fierce in assault, massive, with fangs intact.
Valiant, fierce Salqam whose fangs devour

You are the leaders of all who pray, and with you
You are the imams of those who prayed and in you
hopeful seekers and neighbors find refuge.
For the ambitious and neighbors there is protection

And submission to them is either willing,
Their gain is either voluntarily granted
freely given, or compelled when they resolve.
Pardon, or against their will when resolute

O greatest of men in pardoning when affronted
and most fearsome of men in assaults when they take vengeance!
Most awe-inspiring in valor when avenging

Egypt and al-Dahhak have learned by experience that they
Egypt and Al-Dahhak have experienced that they
are a people who, when they fight, are coals in battle.
Are a people who, when warring, immerse in blood

Why not ask Egypt, which broke its pledge, about them,
Why not ask Egypt which violated its pact
or Rahit, on the day fearless warriors defended the banner?
Or the band on the day the spotted banner stirs

Abd al-Aziz, beneath whose banner marched
Abdul Aziz whose banner those regiments carried
those advancing armies toward the hosts, and then they clashed.
To the armies, they collided and were shattered

There was no land where hypocrisy rose
No land's hypocrisy grew where
without morsels of rebel flesh for your swords.
Your swords did not slice the flesh of those disobedient

Abd al-Aziz built glory and nobility;
Abdul Aziz built glory and honor
indeed, noble deeds are traits of your character.
Nobility is indeed your defining trait
