عَفاwas effaced نَهياthe two pools of حَمامَةَHamamah فَالجَواءُand then al-Jawa
عَفا نَهيا حَمامَةَ فَالجَواءُ
لِطولِbecause of the length of تَبايُنٍseparation جَرَتِran الظِباءُthe gazelles
لِطولِ تَبايُنٍ جَرَتِ الظِباءُ
Hamamah’s two pools are effaced, and al-Jawa too,
The dove cooed gently, yet discord arose
Through long separation; gazelles have run there.
From prolonged difference, the wolves prowled
فَمِنهُمso among them مَنone who يَقولُsays نَوىًseparation قَذوفٌfar-reaching
فَمِنهُم مَن يَقولُ نَوىً قَذوفٌ
وَمِنهُمand among them مَنone who يَقولُsays هُوَit الجَلاءُexile
وَمِنهُم مَن يَقولُ هُوَ الجَلاءُ
Some of them say, “A far-flung separation,”
Some say an aim, others an elusion
And some of them say, “It is exile.”
Some say it’s bare truth, others falsehood
أَحِنُّI yearn إِذاwhen نَظَرتُI gazed إِلىat سُهَيلٍSuhayl
أَحِنُّ إِذا نَظَرتُ إِلى سُهَيلٍ
وَعِندَand at اليَأسِdespair يَنقَطِعُis cut off الرَجاءُhope
وَعِندَ اليَأسِ يَنقَطِعُ الرَجاءُ
I yearn whenever I gaze at Suhayl,
I yearn when I see Suhail in the sky
And in despair, hope is cut off.
In despair, hope is severed
يَلوحُit gleams كَأَنَّهُas though it were لَهَقٌpure-white شَبوبٌa full-grown wild bull
يَلوحُ كَأَنَّهُ لَهَقٌ شَبوبٌ
أَشَذَّتهُdrove it apart عَنِfrom البَقَرِthe wild cattle الضِراءُthe hunting hounds
أَشَذَّتهُ عَنِ البَقَرِ الضِراءُ
It gleams like a pure-white, full-grown wild bull,
It appears a fatigued, unsettled young camel
Which hunting hounds have driven from the wild cattle.
Whose bridle the sterile cows jerked
وَبانواand they departed ثُمَّthen قيلَit was said أَلاwill you not تَعَزّىtake comfort
وَبانوا ثُمَّ قيلَ أَلا تَعَزّى
وَأَنّىand how يَومَon the day of واقِصَةَWaqisah العَزاءُconsolation
وَأَنّى يَومَ واقِصَةَ العَزاءُ
And they departed; then it was said, “Will you not take comfort?”
They became estranged, then it was said, don’t grieve
And how could there be comfort on the day of Waqisah?
But how on the day of utmost grief?
سَنَذكُرُكُمwe shall remember you وَلَيسَand there is no إِذاwhen ذُكِرتُمyou are remembered
سَنَذكُرُكُم وَلَيسَ إِذا ذُكِرتُم
بِناin us صَبرٌpatience فَهَلso is there لَكُمُfor you لِقاءُa meeting
بِنا صَبرٌ فَهَل لَكُمُ لِقاءُ
We shall remember you; and when you are remembered, there is no
We will remember you, but when you are remembered
Patience in us—will there be a meeting with you?
We have no patience, will we ever meet?
وَكَمand how many قَطَعَhas cut القَرينَةَthe tether مِنof قَرينٍa yoked companion
وَكَم قَطَعَ القَرينَةَ مِن قَرينٍ
إِذاwhen اِختَلَفاthe two pulled apart وَفيand in القَرنِthe yoking-rope اِلتِواءُa twist
إِذا اِختَلَفا وَفي القَرنِ اِلتِواءُ
And how many a yoked companion has cut the tether,
How friendship severed many a friend
When the two pulled apart and the yoking-rope was twisted!
When they differed, and crookedness entered the pair
فَماذاso what تَنظُرونَdo you await بِهاregarding it وَفيكُمand among you
فَماذا تَنظُرونَ بِها وَفيكُم
جُسورٌboldness بِالعَظائِمِin great undertakings وَاِعتِلاءُand ascendancy
جُسورٌ بِالعَظائِمِ وَاِعتِلاءُ
So why do you delay over it, when among you
What do you expect of it, when in you
Are boldness in great undertakings and ascendancy?
Are daring acts and vain conceit?
إِلىtoward عَبدِAbd العَزيزِal-Aziz سَمَتrose عُيونُeyes of الthe
إِلى عَبدِ العَزيزِ سَمَت عُيونُ ال
رَعِيَّةِsubjects إِنif تُخُيِّرَتِwere carefully chosen الرِعاءُthe shepherds
رَعِيَّةِ إِن تُخُيِّرَتِ الرِعاءُ
Toward Abd al-Aziz rose the eyes of the
Eyes of the commoners looked to Abdel Aziz
Subjects, if the shepherds were to be chosen.
If the shepherds were to be chosen
إِلَيهِto him دَعَتcalled دَواعيهِhis compelling qualities إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle
إِلَيهِ دَعَت دَواعيهِ إِذا ما
عِمادُthe pillars of المُلكِkingship خَرَّتcollapsed وَالسَماءُand the sky
عِمادُ المُلكِ خَرَّت وَالسَماءُ
His compelling qualities called people to him, whenever
Its urgings called him when pillars of the state
The pillars of kingship fell, and the sky.
Collapsed and the skies poured
وَقالَand said أولواthose possessing الحُكومَةِauthority مِنof قُرَيشٍQuraysh
وَقالَ أولوا الحُكومَةِ مِن قُرَيشٍ
عَلَيناupon us البَيعُthe sale إِذsince بَلَغَreached its height الغَلاءُthe high price
عَلَينا البَيعُ إِذ بَلَغَ الغَلاءُ
And those of Quraysh who held authority said:
The Quraishi leaders said, upon us
“We must sell, now that the price has risen high.”
Is the sale, when prices soared
رَأواthey deemed عَبدَAbd العَزيزِal-Aziz وَلِيَّheir to عَهدٍthe succession
رَأوا عَبدَ العَزيزِ وَلِيَّ عَهدٍ
وَماand not ظَلَمواthey acted unjustly بِذاكَby that وَلاnor أَساؤواthey did wrong
وَما ظَلَموا بِذاكَ وَلا أَساؤوا
They deemed Abd al-Aziz heir apparent,
They saw Abdel Aziz, heir apparent
And did no injustice thereby, nor did they do wrong.
They did no wrong thereby, nor evil
فَزَحلِفهاso pass it over بِأَزفُلِهاin its entirety إِلَيهِto him
فَزَحلِفها بِأَزفُلِها إِلَيهِ
أَميرَO Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful إِذاif تَشاءُyou wish
أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ إِذا تَشاءُ
So pass it over to him, in its entirety,
Then swear its senile oath to him
O Commander of the Faithful, if you wish.
The Commander of the Faithful, if you wish
فَإِنَّfor indeed الناسَthe people قَدalready مَدّواthey stretched out إِلَيهِtoward him
فَإِنَّ الناسَ قَد مَدّوا إِلَيهِ
أَكُفَّهُمtheir palms وَقَدand already بَرِحَhas departed الخَفاءُconcealment
أَكُفَّهُم وَقَد بَرِحَ الخَفاءُ
For the people have already stretched toward him
The people have extended to him
Their palms, and concealment has vanished.
Their palms, and obscurity fled
وَلَوand if قَدindeed بايَعوكَthey pledged allegiance to you وَلِيَّas heir to عَهدٍthe succession
وَلَو قَد بايَعوكَ وَلِيَّ عَهدٍ
لَقامَthen would be established القِسطُjustice وَاِعتَدَلَand would become upright البِناءُthe edifice
لَقامَ القِسطُ وَاِعتَدَلَ البِناءُ
And were they to pledge allegiance to you as heir apparent,
Had you pledged to him as heir apparent
Justice would be established, and the edifice set straight.
