وَهَبتُI gave (spared) عُطارِداًʿUṭārid لِبَنيto the sons of صُدَيٍّṢudayy
وَلَولاand were it not for غَيرُهُsomeone other than him عَلَكَhe champed اللِجاماthe bit
I spared ʿUṭārid for the sons of Ṣudayy;
and but for another, he would have champed the bit.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhenever الشَقيُّthe wretched man أَبىrefused شَقاهُhis ill fortune
بِهِfor him أَوor حَينُهُhis doom إِلّاexcept عُراماinsolence
And whenever a wretch’s ill fortune drove him—
or his doom—to nothing but insolence,
أُحِلَّI bring down بِهِupon him وَلَوand even if أَمسىhe was by evening شَطيراًfar away
وَراءَbeyond الرَدمِthe barrier داهِيَةًa calamity عَقاماirremediable
I would bring upon him, even if evening found him far away,
beyond the barrier, an irremediable calamity.
