Ah, greet the ruins of the faded encampments,

and the foals’ tethering-place, and the fire-seeker’s hearth.

My soul has surely told me that I am parting with

my youth, and union with coveted, companionable women—

and as for Hind, though her home is near, I have become

despair’s brother, or one hoping little, like the hopeless—

and with a woman whose eyes rove, whose affection is turned

from her husband, or one whose condition is known—a spinster.

Sons of Asim, honor your pledge to protect your neighbor,

and you have had no part in it, wet or dry.

Whenever Janba’ called, Ibn Daysaq said:

“Up with you in this—exalted, not brought low!”

It took effect for the man of Kalb on the morning when

Ubayd scowled, with the return from them of the massive, full-grown camels.

Ah, Hammad will surely honor a pledge of protection

against you, and repel the arrogant, glowering man.

Are you not base, when you seek to harm your neighbor?

But for them, you could not ward off a toucher’s hand.

For you shall face the radiant Ibn Daysaq’s

horsemen, who strip horsemen of their battle-gear.

So let me not find the cavalry charging upon you,

and spearing a mail-clad man who hangs back.

When they chase one another, their backs’ ailment is not hidden,

despite what we bear of their densely heaped flesh.
