It is as though, at al-Mudaybir, between Zakka
and the villages of Abu Sufra, I were a captive.

غَريبٌ لا أُزارُ وَلا أَزورُ
Parting from them is grief enough, and that I
am a stranger: none visits me, and I visit none.

Press on, then drink at the watering pools of a people
clothed in the splendid brocade of their deeds.

May poverty pass you by as long as death spares
a spear-bearing Rifa‘i with even a pittance to his name.

For the sons of Rifa‘ah, of Tamim,
are the hoped-for refuge and defenders.

Menders of rifts, rallying to feed guests,
faithful when no protector keeps his pledge.

When bounty sinks away at a star's rainless setting,
the largesse of the sons of Rifa‘ah never sinks away.

They have noble men's tenderness toward their clients,
and crushing deterrents against doing them harm.

All of them are strangers to wrongdoing,
and all are discerning in kindness.

Traits in which each of them resembles the others:
the elder guides their young in them.

تَجافى الغَيثُ عَنها وَالخُضورُ
Many hollow-eyed camels I paired with deep-set waterholes,
which rain and greenery had shunned.

عَنايا مُجرِبٍ فيهِنَّ قيرُ
Their gathered waters, when replenished, seemed
like the tar-mixed salves of a man with mangy camels.

نَواشِطَ حينَ يَستَغطي ابَريرُ
So I stirred the scant waters for tireless she-camels,
brisk when Ibrir shrouds itself.

They sniffed it; then a burst of speed overtook them,
over stony ground, now straight, now veering.

Their throng, as they turned away, seemed
like sandgrouse flying at Dhu al-Hawmanatayn.

Young she-camels that tormented my night upon their backs,
while a girth-strap and saddle tormented theirs.

My journey to them wore down their hump-tips,
and my noonday travel when the midday heat blazed.

far to cross, with rugged ground below.

And people who kept tight-lipped over their bounty,
when asked, as donkeys keep their mouths shut.

Their friendship shunned me, so I withdrew; indeed I
am entitled to that when I am not welcomed near.
