وَقَلبُكَand your heart فيamong الظَعائِنِthe women in litters مُستَعارُon loan
Do you remember them, when remembrance is your need,
and your heart is on loan among the women in their litters?
عَسَفنَthey traveled tracklessly عَلىover الأَماعِزِthe stony ground مِنfrom حُبَيٍّHubayy

They traveled tracklessly over the stony ground from Hubayy,
and the departing caravans veered away from Talah.
وَقَدand indeed أَبكاكَmade you weep حينَwhen عَلاكَcame upon you شَيبٌgray hair
بِتوضِحَat Tudih أَوor بِناظِرَةَat Nazirah الدِيارُthe dwellings
And when gray hair came upon you, you were made to weep
by the dwellings at Tudih or Nazirah.
فَتَحياso they live مَرَّةًat one time وَتَموتُand they die أُخرىat another
وَتَمحوهاand efface them البَوارِحُthe scorching winds وَالقُطارُand rain showers
At times they live, at others they die,
and scorching winds and showers efface them.
فَدارَso, O dwelling of الحَيِّthe tribe لَستِyou are not كَماas عَهِدناwe knew
وَأَنتِand you إِذاwhen الأَحِبَّةُthe loved ones فيكِwithin you دارُa home
O dwelling of the tribe, you are not as we knew you;
you are a home when loved ones are within you.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhenever سَمِعتُI heard لِذاتِfrom a she-camel with بَوٍّa stuffed calfskin

And whenever I heard a she-camel with a stuffed calfskin
moaning, my heart would almost fly away.

قَريبٌnearby لاnot تَزورُshe visits وَلاnor تُزارُis visited
Does life benefit you, while Umm Amr
is near, yet neither visits nor is visited?
وَقَدand indeed لَحِقَhas joined الفَرَزدَقُal-Farazdaq بِالنَصارىwith the Christians
لِيَنصُرَهُمto aid them وَلَيسَand there is no بِهِthrough him اِنتِصارُvictory
And al-Farazdaq has joined the Christians,
to aid them, though through him comes no victory.
وَيَسجُدُand he prostrates himself لِلصَليبِto the cross مَعَwith النَصارىthe Christians

He prostrates himself before the cross with the Christians,
and our arrow has won, so the choice is ours.
تُخاطِرُtakes risks مِنfrom وَراءِbehind حِمايَmy protected domain قَيسٌQays
وَخِندِفُand Khindif عَزَّmighty ماindeed حُمِيَis defended الذِمارُhonor and kin
Qays takes its chances from behind my protection,
and Khindif too—how staunchly honor is defended!
أَقَينٌis it a blacksmith? ياO تَميمُTamim يَعيبُfinds fault with قَيساًQays
يَطيرُflies عَلىover لَهازِمِهِhis jowls الشَرارُthe sparks
Does a blacksmith, O Tamim, find fault with Qays,
while sparks fly over his jowls?
أَخاكُمyour brother ياO تَميمُTamim وَمَنand who يُحاميwill defend
وَأُمُّwhile the mother of الحَربِwar مُجلِبَةٌraising a clamor نَوارُNawar
Protect your brother, O Tamim! Who will defend him,
while Nawar, the mother of war, raises a clamor?
وَيَعلَمُand knows مَنwhoever يُحارِبُwages war أَنَّthat قَيساًQays

And whoever wages war knows that Qays
are champions; theirs are the deep, engulfing seas.
وَقَيسٌand Qays ياO فَرَزدَقُFarazdaq لَوif أَجارواthey had granted refuge
بَنيthe sons of العَوامِal-Awwam ماnot اِفتُضِحَwould have been disgraced الجِوارُthe protection granted
And Qays, O Farazdaq—had they granted refuge
to the sons of al-Awwam, their protection would not have been disgraced.
إِذاًthen لَحَمىwould surely have defended فَوارِسُhorsemen غَيرُnot ميلٍunsteady riders
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِمتَدَّspread فيthrough الرَهَجِthe battle-haze الغُبارُthe dust
Then unwavering horsemen would have defended them,
when dust spread through the haze of battle.
وَكَرّواand they charged again كُلَّevery مُقرَبَةٍprized mare سَبوحٍswimming-strided
وَطَرفٍand a noble steed فيin حَوالِبِهِits flanks اِضطِمارُleanness
and charged again on every prized mare with a swimming stride,
and every noble steed with lean-drawn flanks.
غَدَرتُمyou betrayed بِالزُبَيرِal-Zubayr وَماand not وَفَيتُمyou kept faith
فَداديناًplow-oxen يَبيتُlasts through the night لَهاbelonging to them خُوارُlowing
You betrayed al-Zubayr and did not keep faith,
you plow-oxen, whose lowing lasts through the night!
فَماso not رَضيَتwas satisfied بِذِمَّتِكُمwith your pledge of protection قُرَيشٌQuraysh
وَماand there is no بَعدَafter الزُبَيرِal-Zubayr بِهِby it اِغتِرارُbeing deceived
So Quraysh was not content with your pledge of protection,
and after al-Zubayr no one can be taken in by it.
