ما أَنتَ يا عَنّابُ مِن رَهطِ حاتِمٍ

وَلا مِن رَوابي عُروَةَ بنِ شَبيبِ

وَلا مِن رَوابي عُروَةَ بنِ شَبيبِ

You are not, O ʿAnnāb, of Ḥātim’s clan,

You, O ʿAnnāb, are not of Ḥātim’s clan,

nor from the noble heights of ʿUrwa ibn Shabīb.

nor of the heights of ʿUrwah son of Shabīb.

رَأَينا قُروماً مِن جَديلَةَ أَنجَبوا

رَأَينا قُروماً مِن جَديلَةَ أَنجَبوا

وَفَحلُ بَني نَبهانَ غَيرُ نَجيبِ

وَفَحلُ بَني نَبهانَ غَيرُ نَجيبِ

We have seen noble sires of Jadīla beget noble offspring,

We have seen noble sires of Jadīlah beget noble offspring,

but Banū Nabhān’s stallion is no thoroughbred.

but the sire of Banū Nabhān is not nobly bred.
