By evening your companions had resolved to part,

Stirring the sorrowful one and reawakening longings.

Do you two see the women in howdahs at ʿUnayzah?

Or do you think we can catch up with them?

The camel-drivers urged them on behind their laden beasts,

On mature camels pressing boldly onward, not three-year-olds.

Oh, many a woman says, and many a man:

“O Suraqa, you have indeed been disgraced, Suraqa!”

Those who howled like you have indeed faced

Thunderbolts from me that force necks to bow.

So when you meet a little gathering from Bariq,

You meet a company of the foulest character:

Who fall short when their pebbles are counted,

    And combine abasement with hypocrisy.

And I had indeed intended to destroy Bariq,

But spared them out of regard for our uncle Ishaq.
