All the people's reciters have declared me the victor,
The tribesmen have conquered me, all of them
Except Hanifa, farting along its water-drawing tracks.
Except Hanifa; interpret her territories

A people who are but the dewclaws of cloven hooves; others
A people; they are the refuge of nobles; none but them
Are closer to Bakr when its forelocks are counted.
Closer to Bakr when genealogies are recounted

Days disgrace Hanifa, days that spread their charcoal-blackness
Days will humiliate Hanifa; they wore her out
Across its faces; nothing can wipe it away.
Stripping faces of all their territories
أَيّامَdays when تُسبىit is taken captive وَلاand not تَسبيit takes captives وَيَقتُلُهاand kills it

Days when it was taken captive, taking no captives, and was killed
Days she is taken captive without taking others captive
By whoever opposed it, unless it paid tribute.
And killed by whoever rivals her

Sons of date palms, walled gardens, and a farm,
Sons of palms, walls and a farm
Their swords are wooden shafts with their hoes fixed in them.
Their swords are wood with its territories

Cutting irrigation channels and pollinating palms is their custom
Cutting off the enemy’s retreat and palms’ fruit is their wont
From of old; its endeavors have never gone beyond this.
Yet their endeavor goes no further than this

Hanifa saw, when its deeds were counted,
When Hanifa surveyed her endeavor
How poorly its builder had built glory.
She saw how miserable was the foundation of her glory
لَوif قُلتَyou asked أَينَwhere هَواديthe necks الخَيلَof horses ماnot عَرَفواthey would know

If you asked, 'Where are the horses' necks?' they would not know;
If you said “Where are the battle steeds” they would not know
They would say of their tails, 'These are their necks.'
They said: “These are their tails” and their territories
أَوor قُلتَyou said إِنَّindeed حِمامَthe appointed doom المَوتِof death آخِذُكُمwill seize you

Or if you said, 'Death's appointed doom will seize you
Or if you said: “The pigeons of death have taken you”
Unless you bridle a horse,' its women would rise wailing.
Or: “Restrain a mare” and her tears flowed

When it saw Khalid at al-ʿIrḍ laying it waste
When she saw Khaled in battle formation, he destroyed her
With slaughter, and its tyrant's words had betrayed it,
Killing and subjugating without her tyrant speaking

It submitted, abased, and held out a hand for peace,
She surrendered and gave her hand to peace humbly
After the Sword of God had all but annihilated it.
After God’s sword almost annihilated her

Hanifa has split into thirds: a third of them
Hanifa became a third; a third of them
Are slaves, and a third are its clients.
Are slaves, a third are her confederates

They have given them wives, so they are among them; their genealogist
They married them so they are among them and related to them
Claims for Hanifa the third that remains.
While a third of what remains calls Hanifa home
