لَعَمريby my life لَئِنif indeed خَلّىleft vacant جُبَيرٌJubayr مَكانَهُhis place
لَعَمري لَئِن خَلّى جُبَيرٌ مَكانَهُ
لَقَدindeed كانَwas شَعشاعَtall and lean العَشِيَّةِthe evening شَيظَماtowering in stature
لَقَد كانَ شَعشاعَ العَشِيَّةِ شَيظَما
By my life, if Jubayr has left his place,
By my life, if Jubair leaves his place
he was indeed tall and lean at evening, towering in stature.
He was certainly the burning flame of evening
أَشَمَّhigh-bridged of nose طُوالَlong الساعِدَينِthe two forearms تَرىyou see لَهُfor him
أَشَمَّ طُوالَ الساعِدَينِ تَرى لَهُ
إِذاwhen القَومُthe men هابواfeared القَومَthe opposing men أَنto يَتَقَدَّماstep forward
إِذا القَومُ هابوا القَومَ أَن يَتَقَدَّما
High-bridged of nose and long of forearm, you look to him
With arms longer than spear shafts, you would see him
to step forward when men fear their foes.
When the people recoiled, stepping forward
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed عالىrose high عَلىupon النَعشِthe bier مُحرِزٌMuhriz
لَعَمري لَقَد عالى عَلى النَعشِ مُحرِزٌ
فَتىًa youth نالَattained قِدماًlong ago عِفَّةًself-restraint وَتَكَرُّماand generosity
فَتىً نالَ قِدماً عِفَّةً وَتَكَرُّما
By my life, Muhriz was indeed raised high upon the bier,
By my life, Muhariz was borne high on the bier
a youth who long ago attained self-restraint and generosity.
A man of chaste conduct and generosity
فَتىًa youth كانَwas أَحياmore modest مِنthan فَتاةٍa maiden حَيِيَّةٍbashful
فَتىً كانَ أَحيا مِن فَتاةٍ حَيِيَّةٍ
وَأَشجَعَand braver مِنthan لَيثٍa lion بِخَفّانَin Khaffan مُقدِماadvancing boldly
وَأَشجَعَ مِن لَيثٍ بِخَفّانَ مُقدِما
A youth who was more modest than a bashful maiden,
A man more alive than a sprightly young girl
and braver when advancing than a lion in Khaffan.
And braver than a lion with hasty steps
إِذاwhen اللَحمُthe meat كانَwas الزادَthe provisions لَمnot يُلفَbe found لَحمُهُhis meat
إِذا اللَحمُ كانَ الزادَ لَم يُلفَ لَحمُهُ
جَميعاًall together وَلَكِنand yet شاعَspread فيamong الحَيِّthe clan أَلحُماportions of meat
جَميعاً وَلَكِن شاعَ في الحَيِّ أَلحُما
When meat was the fare, his meat was not found
When meat was the provision, his meat was not
all together; instead, it was shared in portions throughout the clan.
Hoarded, but shared among the living
إِذاwhen الأَمرُthe matter نابَbefell الحَيَّthe clan لَمnot be settled يُقضَwithout him دونَهُwithout him
إِذا الأَمرُ نابَ الحَيَّ لَم يُقضَ دونَهُ
وَإِنand if طَرَقَcame by night الأَضيافُthe guests لَيلاًat night تَبَسَّماhe smiled
وَإِن طَرَقَ الأَضيافُ لَيلاً تَبَسَّما
When trouble befell the clan, it was not resolved without him;
When leadership suited the tribe, none but he
and if guests arrived by night, he smiled.
Would undertake it, smiling if guests knocked at night
