عَفاbecame desolate النَسرانِal-Nasran بَعدَكَafter you وَالوَحيدُand al-Wahid
وَلاand not يَبقىremains لِجِدَّتِهِin its freshness جَديدُanything new
Al-Nasran and al-Wahid have grown desolate since you left.
The eagles have forgiven you after your absence, while the lonely one has nothing new left for his grandmother.
And nothing new retains its freshness.
I have revived the abodes with my devout youth, when their dwellers were about to perish.
وَحَيَّيتُand I greeted الدِيارَthe dwellings بِصُلبِon the rocky ground of رَهبىRahba
وَقَدand indeed كادَتhad almost مَعارِفُهاtheir recognizable traces تَبيدُvanished
And I greeted the dwellings on Rahba's rocky ground,
Was not three years of estrangement enough? Avoidance and aloofness have become prolonged.
And their familiar traces had almost vanished.
I care not for what the ignorant said in folly; should I be condemned for a greeting?
أَلَمdid ... not? يَكُthere be فيin ثَلاثِthree سِنينَyears هَجرٌestrangement
فَقَدfor indeed طالَhas lasted long التَجَنُّبُavoidance وَالصُدودُand rejection
Have there not been three years of estrangement?
Had you returned our greetings, no word regarding greetings or limits would have been said.
For avoidance and rejection have lasted long.
Do you watch us in fear, as if you guaranteed the shedding of noble blood?
لَعَزَّindeed was hard عَلَيَّon me ماwhat جَهِلواthey foolishly did وَقالواand said
أَفيwas it for ...? تَسليمَةٍa single greeting وَجَبَbecame warranted الوَعيدُthe threat
Their folly and their words weighed heavily on me:
You hunt hearts with the arrows of jinn, yet we shoot some down and catch no game.
Was a threat warranted by a single greeting?
A friend of love and loyalty to us; loyalty has avoided you, where is the affection?
وَلَمand not يَكُthere would be لَوif رَجَعتَyou returned لَناto us سَلاماًa greeting
مَقالٌreproach فيover السَلامِthe greeting وَلاnor حُدودُpenalties
Nor, had you returned our greeting, would there have been
We looked - will we see the fire of Ja‘dah? Is its light far or extinguished?
Any reproach over a greeting, or any penalties.
Due to my love for the two visitors to me, Musa and Ja‘dah, even if the fuel ignited them.
أَمِنis it out of ...? خَوفٍfear تُراقِبُyou watch مَنthose who يَليناare near us
كَأَنَّكَas though you were ضامِنٌliable بِدَمٍfor a blood debt طَريدُa hunted fugitive
Do you watch those near us out of fear,
Worries have presented themselves to us, so Ja‘dah said: “Which transient do you want?”
As though you were a hunted fugitive liable for a blood debt?
I said to her, without a doubt the Caliph is the one guided and the rightly guided.
تَصَيَّدنَthey captured القُلوبَhearts بِنَبلِwith arrows of جِنٍّjinn
وَنَرميand we shoot بَعضَهُنَّsome of them فَلاbut not نَصيدُwe catch
They captured hearts with the arrows of jinn;
They traversed the abodes and the ruins to reach you, though your need from the ruins is far.
And we shoot at some of them, but make no catch.
I looked from Rusafah, where is the pebble and sand between their people, and destruction?
بِأَودٍat Awd وَالإِيادِand al-Iyad لَناfor us صَديقٌa friend
نَأىlies far away عَنكَfrom you الإِيادُal-Iyad وَأَينَand where is أودُAwd
At Awd and al-Iyad we have a friend;
There the cattle are taken for sacrifice when adorned, like watchmen over them at Herat for the feast.
Al-Iyad lies far from you—and where is Awd?
As if the slippered, though they are estrays, the lost one’s stick hits the ice.
نَظَرناwe watched for نارَthe fire of جَعدَةَJa'dah هَلwhether نَراهاwe see it
أَبُعدٌis it distance? غالَswallowed up ضَوءُكَyour light أَمor هُمودُa dying down
We watched for Ja'dah's fire—could we see it?
The pregnant camels have reached the end of pregnancy, and the unborn offspring have perished.
Has distance swallowed your light, or has it died away?
We spend the day composed when it darkens, and we travel while the small cats are diminutive sluggards.
لَحُبِّdear indeed الوافِدانِthe two visitors إِلَيَّto me موسىMusa
وَجَعدَةُand Ja'dah لَوif only أَضاءَهُماilluminated them both الوُقودُthe fire
How dear to me are the two visitors, Musa
How many plateaus beyond you were we tasked with, which the about-to-calve camels cross sluggishly!
And Ja'dah—if only the fire would light them both!
When they reach the resting places, they are not tethered, and they have fetters due to prolonged barrenness.
تَعَرَّضَتِpresented themselves الهُمومُworries لَناto us فَقالَتthen she said
جُعادَةُJu'ada أَيُّwhich مُرتَحَلٍdestination تُريدُyou seek
Worries beset us, and she said—
I know that your permission is success, and that if I reach you I will be fortunate.
Ju'ada—“What destination do you seek?”
Favors from you begin upon us, and if we return, your benefaction will be repeated.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her الخَليفَةُthe caliph غَيرَwithout شَكٍّdoubt
هُوَhe المَهدِيُّthe rightly guided one وَالحَكَمُand the judge الرَشيدُthe wise one
So I told her: “The caliph, without a doubt—
You increase life’s love for me, and any mention from your affections is praiseworthy.
He is the rightly guided one and the wise judge.”
If Allah had favored a people, the caliphate and covenants would have been devoted to you.
قَطَعنَthey crossed الدَوَّal-Daww وَالأَدَمىand al-Adma إِلَيكُمtoward you
وَمَطلَبُكُمand the quest for you مِنَfrom الأَدمىal-Adma بَعيدُis distant
They crossed al-Daww and al-Adma toward you;
In time, in Quraysh was established for you the greatest resolution and loftiness.
And the quest for you from al-Adma is long.
Hisham, sovereign rule and the purest wisdom, thrive when you descend upon the plain.
نَظَرتُI looked مِنَfrom الرَصافَةِal-Rusafa أَينَwhere is حَجرٌHajr
وَرَملٌand sand بَينَbetween أَهلِهِماthe people of the two وَبيدُand desert wastes
I looked from al-Rusafa: where is Hajr?
Your favor spreads across the wilderness, and the lions cower in fear of you.
And between their peoples lie sand and desert wastes.
If the misguided opposed you, the fate of Thamud befell them.
بِهاthere الثيرانُthe wild bulls تُحسَبُare taken to be حينَwhen تُضحيthey enter midmorning
مَرازِبَةًsatraps لَهاfor them بِهَراةَin Herat عيدُa festival
There the wild bulls, at midmorning, seem
As for those who obeyed you, they are content, and the obstinate submit in shackles.
Like satraps celebrating a festival in Herat.
You seize the opportunity, then proceed when the armies crowd at war.
كَأَنَّas though المُنعَلاتِthe shod camels وَهُنَّwhile they are حُدبٌbent-backed

As though the shod camels, bent-backed,
For you I have loyalty and gratitude, to praise that comforts the composer.
Were wild lote-tree rods beaten by a sturdy man.
The House of Marwan, your lineage is one of high standing, and ‘Aisha the Blessed, fertile.
وَقَدand indeed لَحِقَhave drawn in الثَمائِلُthe bellies بَعدَafter بُدنٍplumpness

وَقَدand indeed أَفنىhas consumed عَرائِكَهاtheir hump-fat الوُخودُthe swift pace
And their bellies have drawn in after their plumpness,
Hisham and Mughira and Walid bequeathed to you generosity among Quraysh.
And the swift pace has consumed their hump-fat.
From the House of Mughira were established feats, and from the House of ‘Ays were honor and munificence.
نُقيمُwe halt لَهاfor them النَهارَby day إِذاwhen اِدَّلَجناwe travel late at night
وَنَسريand we travel by night وَالقَطاwhile the sandgrouse خُرُدٌsilent هُجودُasleep
We halt for them by day when we have traveled late at night,
From Dhubyan for you a structure was completed, upon a lofty elevated foundation.
And travel by night while the sandgrouse are silent, sleeping.
If the outstanding feats of every clan were milked, you excelled, renewed of attribute.
وَكَمand how many كُلِّفنَthey were made to traverse دونَكَbefore reaching you مِنof سُهوبٍopen plains

تَكِلُّgrows weary بِهِon it المُواشِكَةُthe swift camel الوَخودُthe long-striding one
And how many plains they were made to cross on the way to you,
So may Allah increase your sovereignty to perfection, bounty and plenty are from Allah.
On which even the swift, long-striding camel tires!
O son of the two most honorable, when you are attributed lineage, and numbered among the two lineages.
إِذاwhen بَلَغواthey reach المَنازِلَthe halting places لَمnot تُقَيَّدthey are hobbled
وَفيand in طولِlength الكَلالِexhaustion لَهاfor them قُيودُfetters
When they reach the halting places, the camels are not hobbled;
You have channeled from the Euphrates blessed maidens, reaching as you desire.
And their long exhaustion serves them as fetters.
The mountains were subjugated and fell silent, as the iron is cut into their passes.
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّthat إِذنَكُمُyour permission نَجاحٌsuccess
وَأَنّيand that I إِنif بَلَغتُكُمُreach you سَعيدُam fortunate
And I know that your permission means success,
You attained tranquility, so you said: “Thanks,” there the obstinate mountain yielded.
And that if I reach you, I am fortunate.
There the olive trees are shaded and the grape vines slope, so they are black clusters.
وَتَبدَأُand begin مِنكُمُfrom you نِعَمٌfavors عَلَيناupon us
وَإِنand if عُدناwe return فَمُنعِمُكُمthen your giver مُعيدُgives again
And from you favors first come to us;
The gardens of worldly life were completed in tranquility, so the envious said: “It is eternity!”
And if we return, your generous giver gives again.
When they see them as orchards flanked by crops, they bite their fingers.
تَزيدونَyou increase الحَياةَlife إِلَيَّto me حُبّاًlove
وَذِكرٌand remembrance مِنof حِبائِكُمُyour gifts حَميدُis praiseworthy
You make life dearer to me,
With varieties of fruit and palm trees that bear ripe bunches of dates when laden.
And the mention of your gifts is praiseworthy.
Every victory and well-being that comes with news congratulated the Caliph.
لَوَif أَنَّthat اللَهَGod فَضَّلَfavored سَعيَthe striving of قَومٍa people

صَفَتbecame unclouded لَكُمُfor you الخِلافَةُthe caliphate وَالعُهودُand covenants
If God were to favor the striving of a people,
We were content that your sword is abundant, and that you ward off our sanctities.
The caliphate and covenants would be yours alone.
You are the protectors at every frontier, when the hired arms are confused.

In time there became established among Quraysh
You seize the opportunity, then proceed when the armies crowd at war.
The greatness of your largesse and bounty.
For you I have loyalty and gratitude, to praise that comforts the composer.

Hisham, sovereign and unblemished judge—
The ground grows pleasant when you settle upon it.

Bounty from you spreads over all creation,
And lions lower their heads in fear of you.

When the armies throng together in battle.

Marwan built your house amid high honors,
And A'isha, blessed and fruitful.

And among al-A'yas, nobility and generosity.

From God come honor and increase.

Flowing streams that reached as far as you wished.

Iron is shattered on their shoulders.

There, and the rock-hard mountain was made yielding.

Then the envious said, “This is immortality.”
