What a fine young man, as the horses pant amid the spears,

Whose death Ibn Ziyād announced to al-ʿUqaylī, Ṭāriq!

So, O Ṣimm, who is there for the horses panting amid the spears?

And, O Ṣimm, who will face the shame-bringing calamities that come by night?

And he was indeed bold on the field of battle,

Ever entering when the pavilion’s gate inspired fear.

I saw the noble steeds stripped bare after you,

And the saddles of the swift, lean she-camels were unfastened.
