تُكَلِّفُنيshe demands of me مَعيشَةَthe way of life آلِthe household of زَيدٍZayd
تُكَلِّفُني مَعيشَةَ آلِ زَيدٍ
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِالصَلائِقِwith thin flatbreads وَالصِنابِand mustard-and-raisin sauce
وَمَن لي بِالصَلائِقِ وَالصِنابِ
She demands a life like that of Zayd’s household.
The burdens of providing for Zayd's family fall on me
And who will provide me with thin flatbreads and mustard-and-raisin sauce?
Yet I lack the means or wealth for such duties
وَقالَتand she said لاnot تَضُمُّyou embrace كَضَمِّlike the embrace of زَيدٍZayd
وَقالَت لا تَضُمُّ كَضَمِّ زَيدٍ
وَماand what ضَمّيmy embrace وَلَيسَand is not مَعيwith me شَبابيmy youth
وَما ضَمّي وَلَيسَ مَعي شَبابي
And she said, “You do not embrace as Zayd does.”
And she says, do not gather as Zayd gathered
And what is my embrace worth, when my youth is no longer with me?
But I am not gathered, and my youth has passed
