ياO طُعمَṬuʿm ياO اِبنَson of قُرَيطٍQurayṭ إِنَّindeed بَيعَكُمُyour selling
يا طُعمَ يا اِبنَ قُرَيطٍ إِنَّ بَيعَكُمُ
رِفدَbounty of القِرىhospitality ناقِصٌdetracting لِلدينِfrom faith وَالحَسَبِand ancestral honor
رِفدَ القِرى ناقِصٌ لِلدينِ وَالحَسَبِ
O Ṭuʿm, O son of Qurayṭ, indeed, your selling
O Tu'mah son of Qurayt, your trade
the bounty of hospitality detracts from faith and ancestral honor.
Has left religious scruples and noble descent wanting,
لَولاwere it not for عِظامُbones of تَريفٍTarīf ماnot غَفَرتُI forgave لَكُمfor you
لَولا عِظامُ تَريفٍ ما غَفَرتُ لَكُم
يَوميmy day بِأودَat Awd وَلاnor أَنسَأتُكُمI deferred for you غَضَبيmy wrath
يَومي بِأودَ وَلا أَنسَأتُكُم غَضَبي
Were it not for Tarīf’s bones, I would not have forgiven you
Were it not for the bones of Tarif, I would not forgive you
for my day at Awd, nor deferred my wrath against you.
A day in Awda, nor withhold my anger,
قالواthey said اِشتَرواbuy جَزَراًmeat مِنّاfrom us فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them
قالوا اِشتَروا جَزَراً مِنّا فَقُلتُ لَهُم
بيعواsell المَوالِيَto the clients وَاِستَحيواand feel shame مِنَbefore العَرَبِthe Arabs
بيعوا المَوالِيَ وَاِستَحيوا مِنَ العَرَبِ
They said, “Buy meat from us,” so I said to them:
They said: "Buy some islands from us." I said to them:
“Sell to the clients, and feel shame before the Arabs.”
"Sell your slaves and be ashamed in front of the Arabs."
