Whenever my soul remembers Sharīk, it is torn apart

over a noble man, a leader of the assembly.

And a brother to the dependent, when he feared a stumble,

was Sharīk, and a foe to the haughty, scowling man.

So he had never subjected us to fate's rebuff

at the door, or the bite of harsh years.

Indeed, they left at al-ʿĪṣ a jealously cherished treasure,

and my eye has never seen his like—a precious adornment for its wearer.

And they said, 'Will Tamīm not weep for their brother,

Abū al-Ṣalt, the delegation's adornment, poison to horsemen?'
