When Malik’s allied clans withhold their aid, shame will fall on
Thou'ayr and 'Asim will feel shame
Thuwayr; ʿAsim and Jamiʿ too will be shamed.
When the camels of Malik grow lean.
فَقَبلَكَfor before you ماindeed (emphatic) أَعياbaffled الرُماةَthe archers إِذاwhen رَمَواthey shot
صَفاًsmooth rocks لَيسَnot فيin عادِيِّهِنَّtheir ancient stone صُدوعُcracks
For before you, archers were baffled when they shot
Before thee never did archers so weary,
at smooth rocks with no cracks in their ancient stone.
Aiming their arrows at unbroken line.
لَقَدindeed نَفَحَتstruck مِنكَof yours الوَريدَينِthe two jugular veins عِلجَةٌa coarse non-Arab woman

A coarse non-Arab woman has indeed struck your two jugular veins—
From thee the veins do give an evil smell
foul-smelling at the nostrils, snub-nosed.
Like the foul breath of nostrils unclean.
فَلاso do not تُدنِياbring near, you two رَحلَthe saddle الدَلَهمَسِof al-Dalahmas إِنَّهُindeed he

So do not, you two, bring al-Dalahmas’s saddle near; he is
Bring not thy saddle near to ed-Dalhamus
observant of what the base do, and keen of hearing.
For he's wise to the evil of men, and can hear.

He is the coward, the weakling; before his heart there is no
In his heart there is screen beyond screen;
membrane, and above that membrane there are no ribs.
The choicest part under ribs lies concealed.

Had al-Dalahmas’s mother borne a noble son, he would not have disparaged
If mother of ed-Dalhamus never bore child,
our horsemen—may he never live sound and whole!
None of our horsemen his life would have spared.

He reached the depths of baseness in his mother’s womb,
He hit the womb's core where villains are shaped,
and suckled at baseness’s breast; thus he is its nursling.
And suckled the teat whence the vilest are reared.
