They said, 'Seek your share of reward,' and I said to them:

Who will guard the lair when I leave my cubs?

But Sawadah bares the two eyes of a flesh-hungry

Hawk, screeching above the lofty lookout.

I knew him as my own when they fell forfeit—

The steeds' stakes—and the far-shooter stretched the range.

If you have no woman weeping for you at al-Dayrayn,

Then many a woman at al-Raml weeps and wails.

Like a bereaved she-camel with her calf's stuffed hide, at his familiar place,

She yearned for his hide and limbs.

She grazes while she forgets him, until, when she remembers,

She resumes her low moans, burning within, bereft of her young.

Our grief surpassed hers, even though there recurred

Within the heart, woes of hers fraught with anguish.

You left me when time had diminished my sight,

And when I had become like the worn bone of a decayed corpse.

Indeed, the one laid to rest at Dhu al-Zaytun—so seek reward for your loss—

Has today hastened the decline of my mind and my condition.
