Tuhayya has become like young camels, startled by
Tuhayya awoke as chaste as an untouched virgin
A full-grown stud camel's bellow after a rasping cry.
After the priest a torrent of insults went out of control
ياO يَحيَYahya هَلis there? لِيَfor me فيduring حَياتِكَyour life حاجَةٌa need
مِنfrom قَبلِbefore فاقِرَةٍa crushing calamity وَمَوتٍand death عاجِلِswift
O Yahya, have I any need of you while you live,
O Yahya, does an impoverished, dying soul like me
Before a crushing calamity and a swift death?
Still have a wish left in your life to fulfill?
حَلَّتhas encamped طُهَيَّةُTuhayya مِنbecause of سَفاهَةِthe folly of رَأيِهاits judgment
مِنّيfrom me عَلىon سَنَنِthe path of المُلِحِّrelentless الوابِلِthe downpour
Tuhayya, through the folly of its judgment, has encamped
Because of her foolishness, Tuhayya is finished with me
In my path—the path of a relentless downpour.
My biting sarcasm rains down on her without fail
أَطُهَيُّO Tuhayya قَدindeed غَرِقَhas drowned الفَرَزدَقُal-Farazdaq فَاِعلَمواso know this

O Tuhayya, al-Farazdaq has drowned—so know this—
People of Tuhayy, the Farazdaq has drowned, know this well
In the sea; then it cast him onto the shore.
Then he threw himself into the sea from atop a cliff
مَنwho كانَused to يَمنَعُdefend ياO طُهَيُّTuhayya نِساءَكُمyour women
أَمor مَنwho يَكُرَّwould charge back وَراءَbehind سَرحِgrazing livestock الجامِلِthe camel herd
Who used to defend your women, O Tuhayya,
Who was it, O Tuhayya, that would stop your women
Or who would charge back behind the grazing camel herd?
Or who herds behind the cattle left out to graze?
ذاكَthat one الَّذيwhom وَأَبيكِby your father تَعرِفُknows مالِكٌMalik
وَالحَقُّand truth يَدمَغُcrushes تُرَّهاتِthe absurdities of الباطِلِfalsehood
That is the one whom Malik knows, by your father;
The one you and your father know is Malik
And truth crushes falsehood's absurdities.
And the truth brands absurdities as false
إِنّاindeed, we تَزيدُexceeds عَلىbeyond الحُلومِforbearance حُلومُناour forbearance
فَضلاًin excellence وَنَجهَلُand we act foolishly فَوقَbeyond جَهلِthe folly of الجاهِلِthe fool
Indeed, our forbearance exceeds the forbearance of others
Our virtues exceed other virtues by far
In excellence; and we outdo the fool in folly.
Our ignorance surpasses the ignorance of the ignorant
